9 months of contract work in both IAM and GRC yet got rejected by all cybersec jobs. Got 7 callbacks for regular IT support jobs tho 🙃 biggest joke is my new helpdesk job pays way more than my IAM analyst contract role

As someone that is in the trenches job hunting and watching many around me complain about the market, it's a little wild how so many are not using the techniques from cybersecurity itself to aid in the hunt. I also see this no different than trying to court a lady, most will say no but the right one will show up in time. I also would like to add that YOU as the hunter have to believe in yourself to the point of delusion and with conviction. Even with myself being green, I use the skills I have gathered within this and former industries I was a part of and I speak with intent and even if I don't know the answer I let it be know that I can not only find it but within a timely manner also. Keep you head up people and believe in yourself ;)

Anyone currently considering a CyberSecurity program more power to you... But head my advice:

Having a bootcamp certificate & Sec+ is the equivalent of having a high school diploma 10 years ago. For the money it will cost you, it's absolutely not worth it (in my opinion).

My alternative advice for anyone adamant to get into cybersecurity is as follows. Identify a particular sub-field of cyber and focus on that. Whatever it is, it doesn't matter. SIEM, Cloud, GRC, pen-testing, Threat Analyst....whatever. Utilize your resources (money and time) and work on every project or specialized certificate you can acquire.

Most bootcamps are 10G's and 6 months. I PROMISE YOU...if you spend six months and only a portion of that money on mastering Cloud (Azure or AWS) or SIEM (Splunk) or whatever, and ultimately possessing certificates with that specialized expertise, you'll be a million times better off than having a bootcamp certificate.

And if you feel like you MUST have some broad understanding on your resume, study for Sec+ on the side and pass that test. I wish someone told me this a year ago....SO I'm sharing it with you. Good luck, and godspeed.

Tldw: You're not doing enough. Do more internships, more projects, get more certs, and network like crazy. You have to truly want it because of the competitiveness and scrutiny of companies who want people who are honest in their work since it's a big part of working in Cyber Security.

Thank you Sandra ! Very informative:) Cybersecurity professional with proven skills will see high demand in future job market with all the digital transformation happening around the world with Gen AI implementation which cause more APT . This increase more demand for cybersecurity professionals and companies tend to focus more on their security posture. I think cloud security, GRC, Risk management, SIEM, Data protection, Ai for cybersecurity automation, secure/precision AI, windows security, critical thinking and IR will be more in demand ! Again keep in mind skilled cybersecurity professionals will not be replaceable by AI but boring repetitive tasks can be taken over by AI . Keep learning, upskill yourself, Find the path, put your efforts- soon we will land our dream job!

Those “we are sorry to inform you that you do not meet the minimum qualifications for this position” are truely haunting🙁
Especially having over 70 - 80% of those requirements on your resume, with a portfolio and certifications backing it up. I just want a chance 😔

Do you have a video on what labs or personal projects you should do if you're going the bootcamp/cert route? I'm all for getting experience and I want to make up for not having a degree. I want the recruiter to be like ok no degree but man this guy has a ton or projects and labs under his belt.

Learn to write better resumes and cover letters, experience helps this as well as helps with your ability to interview/talk at length on the tools/practices/policies that enterprise environments use. Education, Certs, and Bootcamps help but they will not get you a job.

My son is working toward a degree in IT and, we're pretty sure that he's going to get a cybersecurity internship next summer. He attended a BSides conference which you mentioned a couple of times in your video. Any thoughts on how he would incorporate that in his resume?

Hi Sandra, my background is 10 years as a networking administrator and I am looking to move into Cybersecurity. In your experience, what postions have you seen where I could utillize my experience. I plan on taking my Security+ next month to learn the basics and dive into some Blue team training. Please let me know your thought. Thanks for sharing all this great information.

Hey Sandra, I remember few months ago you made a video saying that you were pursuing CDSA from HTB. I was wondering if you completed the course yet and if you will make a video review of it.

I haven't watched the full video. However, I'll comment based on the opening/initial video. There is no one certificate that guarantees you a role in cybersecurity or any jobs for that matter. Therefore, in order to succeed, i am learning the foundations of cybersecurity. I am basing my job expectations on the foundational skills acquired rather than a single certificate. Nevertheless, i wish you all the best.
