Foggy Double Pane Window Fix!

In this video I demonstrate how you can potentially repair a double-pane window with a bad seal. There is no way to permanently fix a window seal failure like this without replacing the whole window, but this method may help you get a few more years out of your broken window! Thanks for watching!

PERFORM HEATING CAREFULLY AND SLOWLY OR THE WINDOW COULD CRACK!

Update: This window is still 100% clear and fog free as of October 2021. The original repair filmed here was done in May 2020.

Great video. Here's a little tip we use when we replace a window on an airliner. You take a small cup and put a little hot water and dish soap in it and mix it up with your finger. Don't get it all sudsy but mix it up well. If you now dip your finger in that soapy water you'll be able to run your finger along that bead of sealant and mold it perfectly without the sealant sticking to your finger or making a mess on your window.

This should be shown everywhere not just for the tip, but a demo for all DIYers who share on YouTube. Obviously some projects take longer, but this exemplifies an excellent video… to the point, articulate, informative, easy to follow and well-filmed. Not chit chatty - most of us are in a bit of a hurry when looking for help - but a brief pan to the dog followed by a quip was perfect for connecting with viewers, most of us dog lovers as well. Great job.

I gotta admit it brought a smile when you showed the leaf blower. I immediately grabbed my trusty leaf blower and my hair dryer and it worked! Thank you!

Great video for identifying issue. And great ideas for drying areas.
1)  Painters tape on top and bottom of area to apply sealant.
2) Apply Sealant
3) Spray finger with windex
4) Smear sealant with windexed finger
5) Pull off tape

Great video.... but be careful if you think about doing this. Using a hairdryer heats up the window and although the moisture started to disappear when I tried this, the window cracked from the hairdryer. You've been warned! Approach this method with caution....

air compressor with a fine point tip would work better for exterior.. also just set up a space heater on a stand

Thanks, this was very useful. I put a strip of masking tape over the glass, applied the silicone, and then used my finger to smooth it out. Took the tape off before it dried. This gave a perfectly straight and even line across the bottom of the glass. It really looks like it was part of the window.

The molding (or glazing bead) is not part of the window (IGU) seal. If the IGU seal has failed, the trim might contribute to moisture accumulating around the leaking seal. The window trim is not really the cause of the window fogging. If an IGU is submerged under water, the inside of the IGU should remain moisture free. When a seal fails, air and moisture will get inside the window, condense and fog.

Nice job! I watch you tube videos for anything I can't figure out and 99.9% of the people making the videos either don't know what there doing or don't take there time and explain what there doing and why. You need to make all you tube videos! Thank you

Thank you for this useful video. One question though...when you dry the window from the inside with the hairdryer, where does that vapor go and how does it get out from between the two layers of glass, because if it stays inside, it could form condensation again.

What beautiful brick work and perfectly manicured lawn.

You can wipe silicone the same way you do caulk with a wet finger. Instead of water you use denatured alcohol

I use acrylic paint in a old vaping bottle to seal the outdoor windows cracks. Really work well and it's cheap

FYI - PlyGem warranties their glass for 20 years for seal failure. They won't cover labor after a year, but they will send you replacement glass for free!

I watched another video where someone went to all kinds of trouble to do the same thing. I think I might could do this by myself. Saved video.

Wow thank you so much! This seems to be exactly what our windows are doing and they too are only 5 years old.

I will try. I also bought WD40 which apparently sometimes works if put on the window too. In the past we have just had expensively to replace the panes. I have quite a few at the moment with this including a massive velux one.

Thank you so much I will try this on one of the window panes at my new house. I ran a dehumidifier upstairs when one was condensed like this and the water evaporated. But the one downstairs doesn’t seem to budge. I’ll be trying this out 👍🏼 😊
