Kurt actually liked the song itself, but it was about ridiculing the mainstream, and when it ended up being the thing they were most known for (To the point people showed up just to listen to that one song), he started hating it because of what it had become

That’s like Mariah Carey didn’t like all I want for Christmas because she wrote it from a place of what she never experienced. She never experienced one positive Christmas in her abusive dysfunctional violent family, even in her 30s on Christmas she overheard her family wanting to ‘k-ll her’. She also hated the way she arranged the vocals saying it’s too boring vocally.
She only began to like the song 20years later because she realised she was able to bring other people happy Christmas memories.
It’s actually makes so much sense why artists would hate their own songs they’d write. Most are writing from experience

The reason Kurt hated it (from what I know) is because of how mainstream the song was and how he was against being mainstream and would often troll mtv and other popular music services

Never forget when Nirvana did a joke performance of Smells Like Teen Spirit because the tv studio was trying to make them lip sync on stage

As a person who doesn’t really like rock music, I instantly liked the vibe of Smell like teen spirit the first time I heard the song. It isn’t too hardcore rock imo and the melody is addictive. So I understand the hype at the time and how some people just liked that one single song, without liking other Nirvana songs.

As someone who likes Nirvana, I think the song is overrated they have better songs.
Their song called “In Bloom” actually addresses their fair weather fans, and I think of them every time I hear this song.
