Virtual machines have been at the core of virtualization since its inception. But VMs have gradually declined in popularity because by themselves, they’re not very manipulable.

VMs come with downsides. You can’t configure them on the fly. And you can’t provision one without a lot of extra steps.

So in VMM 2012, MS has taken a step back from VMs themselves – which are still there – but they’re now encapsulated in things we call Services, and Service Templates. Services are the aggregation of OS, hardware, and application profiles onto provisioned VMs, networks, and storage.
