MicroNuggets: System Center 2012 Licensing Explained

In this video, Don Jones covers an overview of Microsoft’s System Center 2012 licensing. Although licensing used to be a complicated nightmare, Microsoft has simplified this entire situation by creating three overarching categories. Don will outline what these are and which programs are included in each.

System center licensing used to be impossible to figure out. Every single product, config manager, ops manager, and data protection manager had different licensing schemes, and it was incredibly challenging to decide how many of each you needed.

Microsoft has substantially simplified that for System Center 2012, and Don breaks down that licensing structure in this video.

There are three main categories you need to know about. The first includes System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM) and System Center Virtual Machine Manager (SCVMM). The second category is a bit of a catch-all and revolves around Service Manager, Operations Manager, Data Protection Manager, and Orchestrator. The third and final category simply consists of Forefront.
