Speed flux - Difficult soldering made easy

Speed flux is nothing more than a phosphoric acid rust converter combined with isopropyl alcohol. The rust converter primes the metal while the alcohol boils off leaving a metal that readily accepts solder.

This is the most amazing flux I have ever tried. I am fortunate enough to have some food grade 85% phosphoric acid and some anhydrous isopropyl alcohol on hand. The results are just incredible. You can easily solder copper to stainless steel, for example. Large areas are tinned easily. If anyone has trouble making this work, it's probably because the phosphoric acid is not concentrated enough. In combination with the fact that ordinary rubbing alcohol is 30% water, there might just be too much total water to make it work.

Thank Mr. Voltage!

Thank you so much for this idea. At my job I repair all kinds of equipment and the copper wiring is always almost black even when freshly stripped back especially on snow plow and salting equipment. I have been saying for years that I wish there was a way to quickly prepare the wire for soldering.(I've been scraping it with a razor blade) with limited results. I can't wait to try this out next time around.

I used 85% phosphoric acid and soldered stainless steel beautifully! Thanks a ton for suggesting

Simply the best way to solder! Many thanks.

I like this idea and i think I'll give it a shot. I've always just used regular plumbers paste flux and it's worked great but clean up has been a pain. This looks like a better option. Thank you for sharing.

Vapors of phosphoric acid or any type of acid are best not to breathe

thanks for the info. Your videos have been quite a benefit to me. I bought some A123 cells and am making batteries for two V65 I have, replacing the AGMs. I am a soldering rookie so this blurb is wonderful -- for me. Where do I get the little squirt bottle you used?

I have a wee bit of phosphoric acid downstairs. Does this also work on aluminium?

I tried it. It didn't work. The rust converter that I used is made with phosphoric acid. After applying the solution to metal and heating it there was a bit of a gunk build up which the solder didn't like. I suspect it's one or more of the other ingredients in the rust converter that generated the gunk. I used bondall Ranex Rustbuster made in Australia.

Has anyone compared this to standard liquid acid flux? The stuff we use at work was great until we moved and couldn't bring it with us for some lame reason.
