What would be your primary use for a bandsaw?

Great review. I've had a Rikon saw for over 10 years, and they're a good machine. Concerning the need for a brake, just keep an offcut of 2x4 nearby. Each time you cut off the saw, run the sacrificial piece of wood into the blade, and it will stop almost immediately. Learned this from Alex Snodgrass of Carter Tools.

Being old I used to read a lot of the old Fine Woodworking magazines and one of the things the old timers said was they would go for the bandsaw first then get the table saw later. I have to say after using a bandsaw for a few years and dealing with solid wood not plywood I can honestly say I never had the need for a table saw for fine wood working or cabinetry (not a production person). Bandsaws are not to be feared they are pretty easy to use and can do more than a table saw. Just pay attention to setting it up...keep it tuned up and let the saw do the work with your gentle touch and everything will be fine.

Great video on your Bandsaw.... this model is my on my bucket list.... one day :) - in the meantime I recently bought an older used bandsaw and am getting it dialed in.One of the things I needed was a mobile base and before I saw this video I purchased another companies mobile base but it was 1" too short on one dimension. I needed a new mobile base and becauee of your video I bought the WEN base and I have to tell, it is super! The instructions are SOOOO much better. They include photos that make the assembly process a breeeze. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and wisdom. Thanks, Larry

I recently touched one of these Rikon. I felt like the materials were higher quality than other stuff I have felt. Nice price and seemed worth the money

I got a used bandsaw recently, and I can easily say it is one of the best purchases I’ve made for woodworking. Bandsaws are surprisingly usable for way more things than I thought at first. Great video.

They’re so safe as well! What a great tool. Not as noisy as some other tools as well.

I have been using a Harbor Freight Band saw. The metal cutting one (4X8 I think). I built a shelf to feed it from the other direction so I can do more cuts with it. I just tried out a HF wood blade, lasted about 10-12 cuts before it dulled. I got the metal cutting blade it lasts. I tried out a 1/4" wood blade on it, and didn't get the results that I wanted from it (not anything near a tight curve cut). I would like a dedicated wood band saw but even the used ones go for high prices. We are almost neighbors, I live on the OK side 30min from Ft.Smith. Keep up the good work, I like your channel.

Thank you for this! So many creators use bandsaw but few explain them. I had mine a year before using it as I was scared of it since I didn't know how/what to really use it for.

I have the benchtop Rikon 10-3061, and love it. Only change I would make would be to make it orange. Oh, and have a standard miter slot rather than the proprietary one it has.

I almost a 10-326 in October at the Klingspor's Woodworking Extravaganza in Hickory NC. I wish I had done it then when I was there. It had a great discount and I could have picked it up while I was in NC. Now I’ll have to have one shipped

Just picked this one up myself. Well actually it took several of us. It is really heavy. Looking to do some bandsaw boxes soon. Thank for the video.

Hey, Matt! Perfectly timed video. I had a friend give me a tabletop bandsaw recently. It wasn’t working, and he needed space. Turns out the safety switch wasn’t in all the way, so it works like a charm. I’ve never had a bandsaw before, though I’ve wanted one, and a tabletop is all I can handle, because storage and portability are essential. (My shop is the back patio in good weather.) Now, thanks to you, I’m eager to learn all about it and see what I can make with it!

Good review, I have the same model bandsaw, there was a promo to include a mobile base (from Rikon). And because it was a floor model, another 10% off. I agree, a brake would be nice. You do need a dust collector, a shop vac does not hack it. Creating usable wood from small logs is a great reason for a bandsaw. I will collect 8"-12" diameter logs, resaw, and let dry, some pretty wood. Thanks.

Great video Matt! Now you have me thinking about getting a floor standing bandsaw for my shop. One thing though - the size of the bandsaw (i.e., 14 inches) refers to the diameter of the pully wheels - not the clearance between the blade and the "upright". They're related but that's not what the size refers to. Also, the larger the wheel is, the more power the saw has because there is more angular momentum in the larger pully wheels.

This is the band saw I want to get for my shop however I either have to wait for a sale or wait and sell more stuff.

Matt, I highly recommend getting a Woodslicer blade from Highland woodworks for resawing. They're extremely sharp and reasonably priced.

Really wanting a Bandsaw, but really waiting on getting my larger shop built. I like that particular Rikon, but also looked at Laguna as well.

I watch a lot of woodworking channels, but there is something about you, Matt, that brings me such peace to watch. When I'm going through rough life stuff, your videos bring the most peace. Whatever you're doing, please keep doing it. Thank you.

I too recently added a bandsaw to my shop. You are right on target about having it mobile. Thanks for recommending the Wen. I am still debating if I should build or buy the a mobile base. I have the casters and scrap to do so. Seems like lately I am building jigs, cleaning/refurbing tools, rearranging, sharpening… wondering when I am going to do something in the shop that actually leaves the shop lololol
