This scene is so terrifying. The music of Ligeti along with the stunning camerawork create an atmosphere of sheer anxiety and terror as we see the monolith. This perfectly captures the idea of facing the unknown.

The ‘over the shoulder’ hand-held camerawork which puts you right there was done by Kubrick personally. Best film ever made.

This movie is from the same era as Sound of Music, My Fair Lady, The Good the Bad and The Ugly, etc.

It must have been impossible to understand in the 60’s what you were watching, trying to comprehend its emotional depth.

Just compared this scene to my BluRay edition and wow I sure was stunned, I sure was able to tell the difference from from 1080p to 4K. I find it hard though to justify replacing my entire collection just for 4K. Perhaps one day as 8K standardizes then I may make that move.
