if you are getting massive packet loss, and if the wires leading up to your router are damaged, you can check check this in the router's 'optical information' tab where it tells you if something is out of the regular working range.

The benefits of hardwiring to a wifi extender can be if a device doesn't have 5g you can connect the extender to 5g and force 5g through an ethernet hardline to the extender. I do this for my ps3.
