134 - Wave Function

In this video Paul Andersen explains how the location of matter can be determined at the nanoscale using the wave function. The absolute value of the wave function can be used to determine the probability of finding matter in a location. Graphical analysis of the wave function is described with several problems.

I appreciate this way of teaching because each short video isn't too much to take in at a time, but over time it amounts to quite a bit of knowledge.

That was the best lecture on wave function I heard online. Thank you sir. I now know.

Amazing video ! My understanding of wave function before this video is 0 and now I think I have enough for my presentation ! Thank you sir :)

Yes, this was very helpful! Thank you so much for explaining it in such a short amount of time!

Late to the party, but this reminds me with how in video games, they mess with programming to "render" stuff YOU are looking at.

When you turn around though, some of the stuff either loses its complexity, shadows what have you.

So much so that in some games when you turn your camera around really fast, you can see stuff render/populate into existence. again, it can be a shadow, level of detail water physics.

So basically, we are in a video game.

I liked your analogy in the beginning. I will never look at crime wave functions the same way again.

Splendid explanation...exuberant lucid explanation

The beginning of the video where he describes crime waves.. Perfectly embodies the disconnect of science and everyday life. 😅😅 using murders as a example so causually. Loving the information though. Thank you.

the observer effect happens for other reasons than magic, it happens because for it to be looked at we are going to be interfering with it

Notice how the constructive and destructive interference pattern or wave on the detector screen formed by the electrons one at a time, looks 3-dimensional, giving the visual impression of depth?

The double slit experiment always makes me think that we are just looking at this property in the incorrect way. The fact that it doesn't make any logical sense should indicate there must be something we are missing - or our understanding of matter at that level is just plain wrong.

It is all about size comparative distance and speed. Probability is a speed phenomenon.

I could've used this when I took ap physics in high school! Too bad that was 2009 - but I'm getting it now.

Okey, 5 minutes...
Should've watched this before using up days :)
So, so very clear.

When I wear eyeglasses I believe light is a wave. When I use a solar calculator, I believe it's particles. I keep thinking about the Gedankenexperiment of Einstein when he imagines he runs next to light and wonders if he would see a frozen sine-wave. Does the sine-wave provide the wave-function and thus the probability amplitud of the position of the photon?
