You've worked hard, practiced harder and are in the midst of a performance that isn't going or feeling the way you'd hoped. Your neck is tight, your face is tense and you are not hitting the notes the way you know you can!

What's going on? Why all the straining to just get through the song? In this video, we're going to study the countenance and techniques of two singers that, are not virtuoso vocalists, but if looked at in the right light, can help you with massive breakthroughs in your battle with strained singing.

Try the exercises and see how they help! They'll work almost instantly if you go into them with the right mindset.

Getting rid of expectations is actually the best point you've given me today. It's a big problem that I usually face when I want to reach a certain note.

This is the reason they teach opera singers to stand in one place, if learn to control your voice standing still without strain on your face, or anywhere on your body your voice is all yours in any other posture.
Also we many times tie a move to a note, for example moving your hand while hitting "the high note" if you don't do that you don't feel safe. Learn to let that go, you have room to feel unsafe and practice at home, not so much on stage.

I gotta come back to this video and say these are some of the best tips i've received about singing without strain. Ive played a couple gigs and had a couple reherasals since watching this last week and can confrim thru testing out these tips that they are seriously golden! Especially the part about keeping your face neutral and relaxed really helps. Seeing Tom Petty's example was really helpful as well. Thanks!!

The best vocal coach ever. I'm so happy to have found a vocal coach after many years. I hope to tap into classes or work in an advanced teaching format after going through the free voice class, it would be neat to do Zoom chat vocal coaching if that is available. Thank you Chris.

This was something I picked up for Chris Cornell without knowing this was something proper to do. It just felt right.

I think playing another instrument while singing helps with this so much (at least for me). Playing guitar AND singing AND performing is so much to keep track of that I end up pushing my singing focus to the backburner while playing (and my voice is always the better for it)

Would love a video on techniques to get energy in the studio like it was a live performance. Its been tough to recreate that for my bands singer.

This is eye opening, TP has always been one of my favorite artists and I had recently noticed that when I “do” TP voice, I absolutely am relaxed and in my range… now I know some why and going forward how to not have to do TP but this style and yes! Thanks

Thank you very much, Chris! I listen to you as a teacher. And a separate "Thanks!" for your articulate explanation and speaking like from a language teacher for a non-native speaker could understand you properly! :) Your videos are always increadibly helpful!

Hi Chris, Australia calling...i had a vocal coach try to explain this - I didn't get it - you nailed it! the 'deadpan' to 'expressive' BACK TO DEADPAN...I missed the back to deadpan bit and would retain the tension....talk about 'freeing' - and really, so simple - thank you!
