How to Learn to Sing Without Tension - Easier Than You Think! (Muscles & Mindset)

Everyone wants to sing without tensing up... To be free to sing what we're hearing in our heads. Yet often times, the pursuit of tension-free singing causes more tension! In this lesson, I'm going to show you how to hone in on ONLY the muscles you need for a specific task while letting other, ancillary muscles rest. That's only the beginning though :) Let's look at regular life muscle usage first and then tie that into our singing!

I've been taking Chris's vocal course and I highly recommend it.

I work as an English teacher (all that means is that I'm read up on educational literature), and I can tell that, educationally speaking, he's far more thorough and specific than most vocal teachers out there, and whether its intuitive for him or he's deliberately studied, he follows good teaching practice.

This video here is another good example but he goes into tons more detail in his course. Check it out; you won't regret it!

I fired my vocal teacher today, you're the first teacher in my 46 years of being alive that has my exact voice range so I can warm up with you. Your the only singer out there that actually sings warm ups you're the best out there (sorry Ken Templin)

I haven’t even watched the video and I already liked it.

That’s the power of Liepe.

Man... I've been trying to sing for some 20 years now and I've literally improved more during the month since I found this channel than I had during those 20 years. I'm even getting pretty close to pulling off a song that, until a month ago, I was completely sure I'd never have the range for. You're doing God's work here, Chris. Looking forward to taking the course sooner than later.

I find alot of my personal tension comes from self-consciousness, especially when practicing in an apartment. I find playing metal / music on my phone and placing it near the door helps ease that anxiety a ton when practicing. It's as if it disengages the thought that I need to practice quietly to avoid being embarassed. And even though it doesn't fully mask the sound, it does wonders for tension relief

This is actually 100% effective especially for males. I strengthen-train as part of my lifestyle and regulart squat & deadlift around twice my bodyweight. Unlike heavy compound movements such as squat and deadlift, singing does not need the full body to contract. Singing is more akin to an isolation exercise such as crunch or lateral raise or fly where if the wrong muscles were used, the muscle that is supposed to work won't strengthen.

you're literally the best voice teacher I've stumbled upon so far, the title you give to your videos is always representative of what to expect in the video (most voice teachers on youtube don't give actual advice), and you're giving actual insight and help, that's so rare !!

You're a legend. You understand singers and what they need. It's an art and a science.

I needed this. I sing and scream at work for up to 5 hours most nights and never feel tense at all. When I try to actually record myself I feel tense and achy within like 15 minutes and it's been really discouraging. Thank you.

The video title should've been:

How to meditate and practice mindfulness - Tutorial

The Analogy:

Mind + Muscle Connection = FOCUS

Mind+Voice Connection=FOCUS

Pretty cool way of explaining this. I watched a couple of your videos and I am definitely learning to get out of the way.

Great lesson! I used to have a lot of tension in my throat when singing live, usually in Songs which are very high for my voice. This happens often, when I really want to nail a note, because I stress myself.
Next time I‘ll try to remember this lesson. Thank you!

I'd like to hear you explaining vocal style of Bobby "Blitz" Ellsworth of Overkill. There's that interesting story. Overkill got signed to Atlantic Records in 1988 and recorded their 3rd album. Managers of the Atlantic Records told Blitz to change his way of singing otherwise he'd lose his voice forever. He changed it and since the 4th album he's sounded more like Brian Johnson of AC/DC. Just more aggressive. But on the first three records he was doing something dangerous to his voice but what?

God, you have no idea how valuable your videos are to me, a beginner just started taking vocal lessons a month ago. The way you take time to explain stuff and not afraid to make all sorts of noises to demonstrate your point makes this channel really special and useful. Thanks man!
