Hose analogy was great, best explanation I've ever heard to explain how to sing from the diaphram.

I went from being told I'm not singing in the key to being told I'm a sharp and flat to being told my songs are very cool and what I changed was I imagined my vocal cords in my diaphragm instead of my throat

This is the BEST explanation I've ever heard with respect to singing! This is the most accurate educational lesson on breathing. It's so much easier to understand than, "Don't sing from your throat. Sing from your stomach."

This 100%! I spend a lot of time with students explaining this very thing. Our vocal folds are like strings on a guitar - but instead of a finger vibrating them, the air does. And each frequencey (note) of vibration needs a certain amount of pressure to vibrate freely. The diaphragm is the nozzle, if it doesn't do its job, the throat will be the emergency dam and mess with our sound and be uncomfortable.

Singing with a microphone is awesome advise. When I practice without a mic I voice gets tired faster. But when I sing into a mic I can hear myself more and my voice is not tired at all.

I would guess this is part of my problem. I also think of this analogy for ergonomic lifting. They say don't just lift something with your arms and back. Use your legs to take pressure off your back. I know when I sing I am only using about 40% of what I am supposed to. Meaning I am not using nasal passages, throat, diaphragm, etc to their fullest ability. Karen, I am still trying to absorb all your wonderful information. Thanks!

Watched this vid a few days ago and I realize that I got it. Not singing from ny throat anymore.
The garden hose example did this for me. Simply NOT reducing and thereby controlling the air in the throat, instead I use mystomach muscle to controll the airflow while relaxing the throat intentionally. It's that simple.
Instantly got better and I also realized why some songs where just working better than others. I was just relaxed because of the song I felt very comfortable with...

Thank you so much.

It's something that feels natural to me because I started to learn how to sing when I was very young, but it just helps to visualize the power coming from your core.

I think a lot of people get confused on how to sing because they're trying to mimic the way that pop stars sound, which kind of disguises the power of their voice as a heady, talking voice. Some examples that come to mind are Justin Bieber, or Brittany Spears. But that's like watching a magician and thinking magic is real. Those songs are produced in a way to feature that as a stylistic choice and you can't just pick up any tune and sing it that way, so it's not helpful to lean on that style as a technique.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, singers should learn the basics before they lean into any particular style. Learn how to do it the classic way, and let the style be an organic manifestation of your voice. Singing from your core is just the essential thing to learn before anything else. Projecting your voice is the essence of singing.

The years I spent having lessons from a professional singer taught me the importance of breathing properly exactly as you describe. I was a 'throat singer' and hated the sound of my voice - I avoided singing. Putting it right took time, but it was worth it!
