There is a place for riffs that center around a single chord, but that place is not an entire song. As long as a one dimensional riff leads into or out of something different, then it's totally fine. The problem I see with a lot of bands is that while the riffs may be slightly different, the whole song will basically just be one riff because they don't go anywhere else.
