My Number One Tip To Canter On A Horse

Today I give you my number one tip to canter on a horse. Cantering on a horse can be hard in the beginning but if you know how to find the correct position you will be doing it like a pro before you know it. This isn't a how-to canter for beginners video BUT the tip in it is just as useful for a beginner as for a more advanced rider.
When I teach people how to canter on a horse this is one of the first tips I teach them (after they have their balance). Like most things horse-related it is all about horse rider position. I hope you find it as valuable as I did when my coach taught me!

This tip was THE most effective canter tip I was ever taught by my coach. Now I want to share it with you and I hope you like it

Josie, you are the first person in the entire riding world to give the most understandable answer to "open your hips."
I couldn't visualize what others couldn't adequately explain.
Thank you so much!!
This instruction will make the world of difference for me 🤗🐎🤗

I find my biggest issue at thr canter is I pinch my knees when I get nervous/unbalanced, which makes me bounce a lot. Your video about following the trot with your pelvis helped me conceptualize "scooping" the canter too -- when I don't pinch my knees, it works beautifully 😅 now I just need to learn to relax! It doesn't help that for my entire childhood of riding I was basically only taught to canter in a half seat (hunters) lol

This is a very good advice. I remember when I started riding years ago, I started with hunter seat and transition to Dressage required correcting my seat first. I had to to learn to sit back. I mean further than I thought I was vertical at first. My perception was that I was vertical and yet watching my video taught me I was still forward of the vertical line. Also you have to open up your thighs and let your legs drop into your stirrups. You have to relax your thighs and contact lightly only with your lower calves. Make sure your stirrup leathers are neither TOO LONG or too short. Most people ride with stirrups way too long to emulate show riders who also ride with too long stirrups. Watch the old a grand masters and they ride stirrups short enough to drop their heels lower than their toes.

I'm 62, riding again after 10 years away. My seat has degenerated to the point where I have to wear half-chaps to keep any kind of a seat at all. My poor lesson horse! Thanks SO much for this tip! My lesson horse thanks you too.

This is such an amazing tip! I’m just learning the canter, and was struggling with just the sitting trot. But even though I have a really good teacher, she can’t explain it as well as you have. So thank you very much!
