The Toyota Yaris Cross might seem like a mild mannered cross over but under the hood it's way more complicated than you might think. But is the total package any good?

I have had this car for 3months and I love it. I thought it would be too small and it is perfect. I am 5’8, I sit comfortably. It is actually pretty fast, well planted on the highway, feels like a bigger car when on highway. And the engine isn’t as loud as they make it sound.

My Parents have one, and only after I sold them on it (they didn't originally like it) after spending a week in a demo, it's a Brilliant car!

Looks rather sharp. If you're after something reliable, reasonably small, affordable and practical for its size its got it all.

Thank you for giving the CVT a fair chance. It gets a bad wrap when it does have valuable use cases in town cars.

I've had my 2023 Yaris Cross GXL AWD hybrid for 3 months. That's the mid range model here in Australia. I have been averaging 3.3 litres per 100km in that time driving in 50% peak hour traffic in Sydney and 50% on a motorway. That's better than 100mpg and so I pay for the petrol on rare occasions and get the electricity for free. I find it super comfy and the handling and drive feel/responsiveness is excellent. I find the build and materials to be excellent too. The safety features are great but I turn off the lane assist as I feel like it might interfere with minimising rolling resistance now and again and that's all important in a hybrid. The CVT gearbox is quiet and as described here, it is snappy when you put your foot down but if you drive for economy and learn how to make use of rolling resistance and 'pulsing' and 'floating' and 'rolling' to keep the regen up, it's a lot of fun and very relaxing. I find that I get the most economy out of this car by driving in normal mode, as this manages the rolling resistance - regen balance best. I adore this car and can't believe anyone would purchase any other car in this class. In the Aussie model we have to plug our phone in for Apple Carplay (and whatever the Android thing is) and that and the lack of a spare tyre are the only drawbacks. Forget the nonsense criticism about rear doors which 'don't open wide enough', very, very few who need to put a baby seat in a car will be looking at a car this size. They should go for the Corolla Cross hybrid. Oh yeah, I bought a new spare wheel for when I take it over the ranges into the outback, where, being an AWD it can handle almost any road Australia has to offer. It's smart and efficient in the city and does what I want it to do in the bush and looks good doing it.

But not a CVT with cone pulleys and belts. It has a Power Split device to share or combine engine and motor - seamlessly.

I actually really like the looks. I just wish they'd offer a manual AWD.

I have one of these in black - steering feel is actually quite nice. Coming from an Abarth Spider, it handles quite well for it's purpose. Lovely and quiet (unless you floor it of course) - makes you very relaxed driving this. Can easily get 70mpg on a mixed route.

Most of Yaris Cross reviews compares it to Ford Puma or VW Troc especially in terms of speed, pickup, sporty driving and so on, but Puma is only mild hybrid not full and Troc isn’t electrified at all… and that’s a matter also taking about price… I don’t think they can be put exactly at the same level

Toyota knows it won't be used much outside a city.
Toyota makes it look like a small SUV and gives it a Cross name.
Nonsense!

"The Yaris Cross probably isn't going to be driven that much outside of town"

One issue with this car is the EV (Electric) side of the transmission will only function when the car is up to normal operating temperature.
However I used to drive a 1 litre VW T-ROC and that cost me £70 per week in fuel, this car costs me £40, Happy days.

My problem is the Yaris Cross (in a lot of markets at least) costs more than competitors two classes above...

The new London cabs basically do this too, but better! They can be plugged in, but they also have a petrol engine, but the petrol engine never directly drives the wheels. It’s just there to turn petrol into electricity that it stores in the batteries and uses to move itself around. So it too is very efficient.

It's so sad that we get another crossover instead of something that looks and drives good. I hate that people are buying this SUV, CUV crap

Everything you say about this car is applicable to you, unexciting but doing the job.

It's an enjoyable drive - 3cyl sounds ok, decent mid-range torque, nice compliant ride and it grips well. I test drove one recently and out of several cars including EV6 and Ioniq5 I had most fun in this.
