I was fortunate enough to survive WW2 in Britain when we had food rationing. Nobody had a refrigerator. We would eat anything we could get and there were no best before or use before dates. You were grateful for what you could get. We relied on our eyes and nose and I honestly cannot recall anyone suffering from any form of food poisoning

It's important to remember that there are "best before" dates and "expiry" dates.

Thank you for the info. I guess I'll have to toss out the ground beef and the oysters I got on sale because of the expiration dates. Sometimes we "burn before we learn."

Any meat or poultry products can be eaten no matter how old they are even if they smell bad as long as they are thoroughly cooked. The meat is just more aged and sometimes will acquire an interesting flavour. Heavy emphasis on thorough cooking.

FYI, a good way to check if eggs are off is to put one in a glass of water. If it floats, it's probably no good. If it sinks, it's good to eat. I've had eggs which were still good over a month past their expiry date.

hi...few weeks ago I ate at a friend house and he put on the table a piece of camembert or brie full of mold ..he cleaned the mold and he started to eat it..I ate it too ..not too much ..but I didn't want to hurt his feelings..I don't feel well ever since. .I had diarrhea. .nausea..many bowel movements a day ...now I feel better but still a bit nautious. ..what should I do??

I'm an 80's baby we didn't hand exp dates back then.
So I ignore them, if it looks good and smells good I'm eating.

I searched this because I just ate an expired Doowee Donut I just found in a storage because I was so hungry. Its past nine months from its expiry date and it still smells good and taste good like yeah, I ate it.😅 Minutes past, I'm still fine though.

I can't agree about expired or old eggs. I got really sick once on mayonnaise past it's date and it was the eggs that did it. I never keep mayonnaise once open and kept in the fridge longer than 3 weeks.

The problem with ground meat verses a piece of meat is any spoilage bacteria is on the surface of the meat and is killed when the outside is cooked even if its raw in the middle, in ground meat the bacteria is all through the meat, eating it undercooked is a risk at anytime.
