Maps are flat. Everything near the poles is stretched. Look at a globe.

That is the Mercator projection it makes everything smaller to fit on a map the close to the Ecuator the smaller the picture of it is . An example would be Kenya which is bigger than Nigeria but it looks like Nigeria is bigger than Kenya becasue it is closer Kenya is closer to the equator.

You cannot put the surface of a sphere on a flat surface so more northern and southern places look larger and places near the equator look smaller.😊
