The world map...is wrong because the size is wrong. This is why we painted a different kind of map at our Nas Daily office.

Mercator was a genius. He invented a map that could be used for navigation accurately. No other map before had done that.

That map is missing dozens of countries, but even if it weren’t, it’d still be a lie. Every flat projection of a sphere has to be distorted, so any map will have to sacrifice shape or size.

The most accurate way to project a map is a globe. All the other projections sacrifice accuracy in longitude, latitude, size, or many other factors because projecting a 3D object onto a 2D plane is impossible

The Mercator projection isn’t strictly wrong. It preserves shape, not size, which is fine for it’s intended purpose.

Well, my geography teacher said that there's "no perfect" world map in the world. Every map are drawn to be used in different ways. Some show each countries' sizes, as the video showed, some show the right angle relationship, and some show the correct direction of sailing. You can deny any world map drawn by scientists or sailor, whatever, since they all have their own advantages and disadvantages.

There is no universally "correct" map. Different maps focus on specific purposes. The Mercator projection is for sailors to be able to sail across the ocean, and is "better" for that purpose than the Gall-Peters map.

It’s not a “lie, ” it’s a projection of a 3d globe onto a 2d piece of paper. The Mercator projection distorts the sizes in exchange for shape and general directionality, and the gall peters projection preserves the relative sizes while distorting the shapes
