Why You Can't Have Orthostatic Hypotension with POTS #dysautonomia #pots #postconcussionsyndrome

A person cannot be diagnosed with both orthostatic hypotension and POTS simultaneously, as they are mutually exclusive conditions. In orthostatic hypotension, blood pressure drops upon standing, and the heart rate does not increase enough to compensate, leading to symptoms like fainting or blacking out due to cerebral hypoperfusion. In POTS, the heart rate increases excessively upon standing to compensate for the drop in blood pressure, preventing syncope or loss of consciousness.

Let's cover a case study of a patient diagnosed with orthostatic hypotension due to small fiber neuropathy, where the blood pressure drops upon standing, and the heart rate increase is insufficient to maintain adequate cerebral perfusion, leading to syncope events. Proper diagnosis is crucial for determining the appropriate treatment approach, whether addressing the underlying neuropathy for orthostatic hypotension or managing POTS symptoms.

Thank you for addressing the differences. I have Orthostatic Hypotension but nobody seems to know as much about it as they do POTS.

So. I’m diagnosed with Dysautonomia including POTS, IST, Vasovagal Syncope and postural Hypotension. These diagnoses followed me blacking out, wearing holter and BP moniters, tilt table tests and much more

Would love an explanation as to why sometimes I meet criteria for POTS (including BP *rise*, at times significantly) and other times I meet criteria for OH. I’ve been diagnosed with both. What I think you mean to say is, POTS and OH won’t present at the same time

I listened to this several times and still don't understand what you're saying. The video description explains it much better.

Is there a long form video on this comparison? I have been told I have both, so now I am terribly confused and would like to do my due diligence to understand before having to pay for a doctor’s visit to ask about this as I don’t have insurance currently. Thank you!

Not sure I agree. I saw a specialist yesterday for dysautonomia and when he was taking my blood pressure, he said my blood pressure spiked and then dropped. He said I had both. It wasn’t based on heart rate as much. I would love to know your thoughts on that.
