Romania was internationally recognized in 1878, but its history is much older. To understand the people who inhabit this country, one must go back thousands of years and meet the first king who united the local tribes, Burebista. He and his successor, Decebal, warred against Roman legions, and although they displayed extraordinary bravery and military prowess, it wasn’t enough to preserve their independence. In this book, you will discover how Romania developed from a distant Roman province on the fringes of the Roman Empire to a modern state in eastern Europe, one ready to adopt Western values.

A bit of ojection about statements at 1:10- . An invasion even leaded by Caesar would have paved the road to roman colapse at that very moment as not even in their sweetest dreams romans could have conquered Dacia at that time. Trajan mobilised the greatest war effort in Rome's history and he had an edge-defeated victory. And Decebals's Dacia was less than half of Burebista's.

People, Romania isn't "lagging behind the rest of Europe..." — because *Europe* is not just the EU, or *Western* Europe. It's the entire *continent.*

It is true that within EU, Romania & Bulgaria often find themselves on the last rankings — but that's bc, unfortunately & generally speaking, the more you go East & South-East on the continent, the poorer the countries become... it's just how it is.

Anyway, nice video per ensemble.👍 One thing I'd like to add: our ethnicity is not really "mainly Roman" anymore. That's how Romanian ethnicity came to be, but nowdays ppl's DNA has pretty much the same "Balkan mix" present in the rest of the region.. 🤷‍♀️

This video has quite a few unfortunate inaccuracies and omissions

1. The principalities didn't simply spring up after the fall of the Roman Empire. Between the 5th and the 10th centuries there were substantial movements of European tribes on those lands, e.g. vizigoths, saxons etc.
2. There is little mention of Transylvania being under Austro-Hungarian rule for centuries and of Hungarian and German settlers in Transylvania. The revolution of 1848 and the sense of national identity developed differently in Transylvania under foreign rule
3. There is no mention of Michael the Brave's de facto union of the three regions in 1599-1600, a pretty big miss, since this is the first time Transylvania, Moldavia and Vallachia were under one ruler and is therefore the precursor to the Great Union that Romanians kept striving for
4. There is no mention of when and how Romania transitioned to monarchy. This is important, as it was not organic
5. Most glaring inaccuracy: The Iron Guard is portrayed as some kind of youth-led revolutionary movement that wanted to modernise Romania. They were a far-right, fascist, anti-semitic organization supported by Germany and in conflict with the monarchy. One of their ideological sympathisers (but political competitors), Marshal Ion Antonescu, essentially turned Romania into a Nazi-allied military dictatorship during the first part of WWII and was responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Jews during the Holocaust. He was ousted after King Michael led a coup against him on Aug 23 1944 and Romania switched sides. Yes, Romania allied itself with Germany to keep Russia at bay. But it also did so because there were fascist, anti-semitic elements in power

Need to correctly portray the past if it is to serve as the right lesson for the future

Romans did not named Romania. Romania comes from neolithical times from Râmi people the proto dacians wich comes to the name rumân and român meaning romanian, this is way before any civilization. Rome comes from Dacia Romania. Not the other way around. People have been fed with made up history fir long now, go verify your sources before stating the main stream agenda.
