Stagnant water is a lot worse in places like mineshafts. If you disturb it there, it can actually kill you. Mineshafts often contain small concentrations of toxic gasses. They seep through the rock, build up, and get trapped in water that remains still for a very long time. The water absorbs the gasses from the mine, and the air in the mine slowly loses the toxic gas. But when you disturb the water, it can flood the tightly enclosed mineshaft with all the gases it's built up over all that time.

Unironically the original video of the hospital morgue filled with still water was actually legit scary how much bacteria was in there

I actually have a friend who got a bad viral infection in his feet by getting them soaked in stagnant water while working in poor neighborhoods. If there's a puddle that has been there for a long time or a basement that's always flooded, you actually are in danger just from getting wet. You might not die, but you might get a viral infection that can't be cured and will cause you misery for years.

"Still water ain't that dangerous, it's a little exaggerated."

I feel like the fear of still water is mainly rooted in the urban exploration crowd for one reason: gases. In nature stagnant pools emit gases as a result of anaerobic bacterial activity, but this isn’t an issue because it usually blows away. In an enclosed space like a basement however these gases, like hydrogen sulfide, have nowhere to go and so collect over time. In extreme cases rooms with still water may become entirely anoxic, suffocating anyone who enters them.

"Still water has joined the likes of skibbidi, rizz and hawk tuah"
Was never a sentence I ever expected to hear in this single, fleeting, life of mine.

Unironically still water is probably the thing that has killed the most people both because of the contamination of the water but also the mass breeding ground for mosquitoes

0:20 - I don't think that means moving water is automatically drinkable, there can always be bacteria etc. inside. Just clarifying - "less likely" does not mean "impossible". 😉

Nearly invisible, motionless water is a real hazard to those who explore abandoned mines.

Okay, but the one at 0:52 was actually pretty good. I don't know if it's just because it is recorded but I could not tell that the "floor" was water until they panned to the door.

A pool of stagnant water isn't itself a major hazard in the context of a derelict building, unless it's deep, hard to see, and/or contaminated with chemicals. You really should either put on a respirator or leave outright when you see stagnant water in a derelict building, though, because with all that water comes a staggering amount of mold, with potentially toxic spores that will have built up in that confined space for however long.

Plus the erosion might have compromised parts of the building's structure.

Remember- boiling water DOES kill biohazards- but DOES NOT purify the toxins they leave behind or any chemical hazards- always use a filter if you can

Also lukewarm water is an incredibly volatile temperature of water for the rapid development of biological growths in still water- keeping temperature control of water is also a must
