I actually live where the crucifix is located. A man placed it there in honor of his son who passed. Whenever the ice is thick enough during the winter, the town will usually cut a hole right above the statue so you can look at it. It is not that scary. There are plenty of ship wrecks and ghost stories that take place on lake Michigan that are a lot more terrifying.
