This is actually how the original curling irons worked.

My great grandmother had an antique curling iron that really was heated up by the fire.

I went to cosmetology school in the 80s. We learned how to use a Marcel iron and were taught to always test the iron with a paper towel every time you brought it out of the fire.

It is the same....been doing this in black households since forever

I would think as long as you don't get it too hot it would be alright. This is historically accurate in that it's all people had before electric styling devices were invented. Sure, you can use heatless methods but for more precise styling, heat is necessary.

BIg deal. They were used all the time before they came out with electric irons. Just don’t let it sit on the fire for long. You gotta know what you are doing. Same with pressing or I should say straightening African American hair, they used iron combs that were heated on the fire or stove before chemical straighteners.

Hair Buddha. This is a serious question. What do you think people used before electric styling tools? The used the stove. Hot combs and marcel irons. My mother pressed my hair with the hot comb on the kitchen gas stove.

My kids' gramma used to chase their auntie with a hotcomb. 😂 It was cold but the threat of that thing made her run. 😂

It is also still done in households in the USA or other countries when they can't afford an electric curling iron, or if they used the old style for years and prefer it. This doesn't mean that @Hairbudda is wrong, but he might not understand how some people use this style. As a matter of fact, the first time that I had my hair curled, I lived in a group home. A black girl there curled my hair with one of these. Another time she used a straightening comb.

I see all these comments saying "Well this is how things used to be done..." Maybe so, that doesn't mean they were good for your hair. Considering the fact that Hair Buddha is a professional, I'll take his opinion over the idea that this is just how things were done.

There were many people who did burn hair off back when this was normal practice. But we have moved on since then.

Was not the normal iron for clothes the same which was used for straightening hair? Maria Cary in her song fantasy, I believe, she was showing that she ironed her hair like that ( before the days of hair straighteners)

When I was younger, I asked my Mom for a hair straightener, and she used the iron for clothes.. so whatever you got that works, I guess, as long as you know what you're doing lol but my luck, I would get it too hot and burn my hair to shit

I didn't know these were still around, these were actually the first curling irons, guess it was luck first time you ever used it though.
