I’m a black girl that grew up getting relaxers since my dad used to style hair.

Rules of getting hair relaxed:
1. No scratching ur scalp the night before
2. No playing/combing/messing with ur hair the night before
3. Stay still and get that relaxer applied as quickly as possible
4. Notify ur stylist as soon as it burns, a little before then cause it’s gonna take a minute to wash out
5. Be gentle with ur scalp after
6. IT WILL SMELL LIKE UNWIPED ASS

Edit: people keep reminding me of new rules so here😂:

7. Don’t shampoo 1-3 days prior
8. Don’t relax on bleached hair
9. (Apparently) dont relax ur hair at all

To the first woman: Relaxer is NOT shampoo! You do not lather it with your hands! In fact, rubbing it in is the perfect way to burn your scalp off in addition to your hair. I'm 100% shocked none of them complained about pain from chemical burns considering each used horrible techniques.

I love how compassionate you are. You aren't mocking anyone, you understand how much hair matters. Thanks for being you Brad!

4C girlie here...I'll never forget the last time I ever relaxed my hair lol. I was sitting in the stylist's chair and saw her eyes widen suddenly. Then she held up about 6 inches of length 😭 I had looong hair at the time and I CRIED while she styled it. I rocked a minibob for a while and vowed never to do it again. Now if I want straight hair, I throw on a wig!

Thank you for advocating for curly hair autonomy! As someone who has had red curly hair my whole life everyone around me is so attached to it I can’t do anything different to it without wails of protest and guilt tripping. So thank you!

I know the first girl in this video was heartbroken but she's DEFINITELY one of the few people that can totally pull off a bald head. From that beatifullll skin tone to her facial structure, she's perfect💕💕

I am so glad I didn't let my mom relax my hair. She literally bought the boxes, invited my cousin over and right before we were going to start I finally started crying and telling her I just wanted to cut off the damaged hair and leave the rest of it alone.
And so we did, and now my curls are POPPIN

This is why it's important to read instructions on things that are new to you or, better yet, consult a professional. I've been doing my own relaxers for awhile but that's only because the person who was doing them before gave me tons of tips and advice before he moved away. I even had someone else helping at first. These things have to go on quick, only on the unprocessed areas, and get rinsed out really well. Sometimes, in the interest of speed, accuracy is lost and the chemicals get on skin causing painful chemical burns and/or the already processed hair causing breakage. Even professionals can have that issue. I'm so glad Brad is taking the time to educate on them to his viewers. Bleach and relaxers are the worst things for hair by themselves. Put them together and all I have to say is Nair is cheaper and just as effective.

It's been close to 30 years since I last relaxed my waist-length hair and this video gave me flash backs to the chemical burns on my scalp. Even so, my hair never fell out (It hasn't ever been bleached so that helped). Also when the first lady stuck her hand in the relaxer, I knew we were in for a ride.

So imma just say this, black woman can literally pull any hair off. Like from big hair, to straight, to freaking bald! They literally rock everything

Helping me with my resolve to stop the generational trauma with relaxers in the black community. Some days I want to stop being natural but this helped me 😂

Losing your hair when you don't want to lose your hair feels almost dehumanizing. And I've never even lost all of it! I can't imagine losing it all in one fell swoop, without even being able to ease into it. 😢Feel so bad for that last woman especially; hope she's doing okay

I feel these clips. I went bald from chemotherapy at 30. I was told I needed chemotherapy and signed papers and they started immediately I was so sick. This was within 10-15 minutes of my diagnosis. When my hair started coming out in clumps if I scratched at my scalp I wanted it shaved. I waited 10 days and kept asking. Nurses couldn't do it because they had to use disposable clippers and were out, so my partner went and bought new plug in clippers and a big garbage bag. Cut a hole in bag to fit head and catch hair and he started clipping. I knew it was coming and it was still the most emotional I was, even after having been on life support, spleen removal, 2 months of nobody being able to diagnose me, and being told I was going to die in the hospital, and that was it. It was probably overwhelming joy that I could control something in my life again but I get how emotional she was - nothing prepares you for it if it isn't something you truly want, even when you know it's coming

I appreciate how sympathetic and sweet you are when you watch a video where someone is clearly upset by what happens. The sass is super fun but you never take it too far, its part of the reason i love your videos so much!❤
