I hope so much that it gets the love it needs to run emulators and retropie. It will definitely be my next tv/emulation device. Please nerds we're counting on you 🙏

The main problem with these "pseudo-clones" of the original RPi is that they have pretty bad interfacing capabilities on their GPIO compared to what can be done with the Broadcom chips used on the Raspberry Pi.
If you just look for a simple Linux computer, with just USB and video, then the Orange Pi is perfect. As soon as you will deal with GPIOs, it will be a completely different story. First, just compare the OrangePi GPIO connector with RPi GPIO connector : 26 pins vs. 40 pins !!!
What makes the success of the RPi is that the complete GPIO documentation is available, along with drivers source code. When you work with these clones, I²C and SPI drivers are most often missing or buggy or terribly slow (most of the time, you can not access directly to the SPI registers, you have to call a system driver, giving a sluggish response time)

It is surprising what you can do with these boards.
I know that Chris from Explaining computers goes into these types of boards a great deal.
They can do many things you wouldn't think they'd be able to do.

It's like an RPi4, but available, faster, and cheaper!

If it's designed to handle 8K @ 60fps why was it struggling on 4K?

I would like to know how these things faire on DAW BITWIG in particular but Reaper or Ardour would be useful too

Cheers for your videos & time

It seems plays DSD/DST files up 128 quite well. I doubt that many people will use it as a desktop computer, however for a server 24/7 is great.

for SBC's these are descent and have good support, have been using the older Orange Pi Zero for years as a super cheap dedicated 3 node octoprint server - it used to run a bit hot but descent cooling solved that, its been up over 4 years now.

Looking really good indeed! Still, I'd like to know about its power consumption if you don't mind.
Thanks for sharing.

I'm confused. You had issues playing 4K but this board is rated for 8K? 🙁

The absurd NVME form factor limits its utility. 2242 SSD's are much more expensive.

very impressive! I plan on using the Orange Pi-5 with some astronomy software such as Stellarium on Ubuntu and use the NVMe SSD for quicker memory. What would be the best way to add Bluetooth and Wi-Fi while keeping the SSD memory? 😎 Thank you for the great demo video.

Awesome SBC hardware wise but horrible software support. I can't believe they use ancient Linux kernel for rk3588. Are they expecting users will do all the custom build for them? What a letdown when we finally have a SBC that can compete against Raspberry Pi 4 but with horrible software support from the company. This is what make raspberry pi so popular because they always have software support for their devices. Sadly most SBC maker companies only care about quick cash grab but never care about long term support for users.

Mine just arrived. I'm making a Lego case just to protect it until my real case arrives. A clear acrylic case became available on Ali Express Christmas Day. Raspberry Pi heatsinks do fit (the small individual ones, not the big ones that screw onto the board) I'm a bit disappointed that the new Droid Orange Pi OS isn't available yet.

While I was playing with my Legos, I watched some videos about Libre Computer. If you are looking for a Raspberry Pi replacement, there you go. The La Potato is RPi 3 form-factor and runs RPi OS along with several versions of Linux. The cases fit. The GPIO pins are identical to RPi so it can use its Hats. Libre contributes heavily to the upstream Linux distros. I was just really impressed with these guys. I'm wondering how I missed them. If I have a few bucks left I might pick up one of those too. It's a capable media device if nothing else..

Don't forget that there is already a classic case. All interfaces were brought to the case. I published it in cult3d under the name CLASSIC ORANGE PI 5 CASE
