The Orange Pi 5 is a powerful new single board computer that is actually available to purchase! In this video, I review the specs of the Orange Pi 5 and then configure it with an initial OS running on a microSD card and then flash the OS onto a connected M.2 SSD for super fast performance.

Doesn’t anyone find it weird downloading an OS from Google Drive? 🤔

Lack of availability of the Raspberry Pi has definitely accelerated interest in other options.

Raspberry Pi's are dead. They screwed up by catering to businesses and allowing wholesalers to price hike things. The whole SBC market is screwed up now.

Orange Pi 5 and similar boards using RK3588 chips are much more superior to Raspbery Pi 4. Even the previous generation of RK, which is RK3399 was already superior, 3588 can be already used as a full-fledged desktop replacement for most of the tasks.
As for the WiFi and Bluetooth you don't need to sacrifice the M.2 slot - you can just find a USB dongle which is compatible to Linux.
And the las bit - you didn't need to flash the M.2 NVME drive with stock img you downloaded - you could have just clonned your SD card to it, using the same DD command. The only difference is that you would need to extend the SSD partition after that, to span all your 128 Gb drive and extend a filesystem, but that can be done with just two commands

How about that ability for POE powering the board?

High production value, clear, concise, to the point. You earned a sub, sir. Thanks!

Hey,
great video, but please don't flash the SPI. It is where U-boot is located, which makes it integral for this thing to boot. It's comparable to a UEFI BIOS. It should only be flashed when you either have to or need to update it! I'm not versed with the OrangePi but there was an option to set the bootenv and that's what you'll need to change. Also please use the "o" key in gdisk to create a new partition table, this will save you the deleting part... ;)

I hope this Orange Pi will have more community support. It is a good starting point since Raspberry Pi won't be out at least until 2024 which took too long.

Once we can run Proxmox on the OPI5, memory will become very useful when running VM/LXC's. I have a 16GB version with an 2TB 2280 nvme. Edit; just noticed that someone has created an arm-based proxmox version.

I just took delivery of mine. Looking forward to setting it up. Raspberry pi is resting on their laurels and not innovating. I truly hope OP and others gain more support.

32Go RAM: yes, with Docker, were the CPU is not really important but available RAM is crucial. Anyway the 32Go version is not available.

3:12 True, however it's possible you could compensate for this by making a RAM disk. if you get say the 16gb or 32gb model you can have a script that copies some of your stuff from the micro SD into the RAM directly. In which case it should run faster than the SSD in theory, since RAM disk almost always beats SSD speeds. Whether that pans out in reality with the orange pi is a matter of trying it haha. Curious if anyone's done any sort of benchmark testing with this.

A very useful video. Thanks!
Some additional pieces of info that could have come handy to novices:
- Mentioning that it is possible (and useful) to configure their DHCP server (usually router) to give this particular MAC address the same IP address every time
- A recommendation for a WiFi&BT via USB dongle that will work out of the box
- How to use X serve to connect to this machine from another desktop. Failing that, some other way of GUI access - RDP, VNC...

If it was poe I would be more interested as the price would work over my pi4's with hats.

Checked the price 3 min into the video and immediately it’s a hard pass. By the time you add cooler, case and ssd you’re looking at 150-200€, which is same as some mini intel PC’s from AliExpress.
Idea of Pi was to get a working computer for under 50$, but that founding principle was clearly lost.

Great video! Have you considered doing a video installing home assistant on an Orange pi 5?

Thank you for the great video. The OPI5 is the new kid on the block but there is already a lot of activity regarding OS choices, use cases, and documentation. The one omission is on-board WiFi but that can be solved easily with a WiFi USB dongle. One huge feature over the RPi is M.2 storage but getting the OS image onto a NVME SSD can be a bit tricky.
The 8gb OPI5 first came out with a price point of $85 but now has quickly risen to $145. Still a good price compared to the Rock Pi 5B or the Khadas Edge 2.

Appreciate your review, the "have to choose between WiFi and the SSD" was a real deal killer.

The lack of Wifi and the price being $100 is a killer for me. I have several Pi4s already and can wait for something more complete and lower priced.
