ABOUT THIS PROJECT
===============================
Coral reefs are known as “the rainforests of the sea”. These vibrantly complex ecosystems harbour the highest biodiversity of any ecosystem globally. An estimated 25% of all marine species depend on reefs. They are also crucial for millions of people, providing food, livelihoods, resources and coastal protection.

Major threats, such as over-exploitation and climate change, are jeopardising the future of coral reefs. In the last few decades, sharp declines in reef cover have occurred worldwide. This is our first coral reef project to restore damaged reefs in the northern waters of Nusa Penida, Indonesia.

Our long-term goal is to improve resilience by enhancing connectivity of fragmented reefs whilst protecting and preserving endangered coral species. Led by our local team of expert divers and marine biologists passionate about the preservation of this marine ecosystem, we work with local people to promote positive community involvement in coral reef restoration.

That's cool! If you wanted to, I would love if those sound files were made public, I'd love to listen to them myself and see if I hear a difference :D

It's amazing to see how many more fish there are in the sites you've laid out already, even though the reef hasn't even regrown yet. Just having the structures and the beginnings of a reef attracts other wildlife. I'm REALLY excited to see the results of your comparisons!

Would be interesting to see if playing “healthy reef noise” in a restored reef would boost the respiration rate

Hey @MossyEarth-FieldNotes I got an idea for securing the corals.
Have you heard of GelMA? Scientists use it as the adhesive in 3D bioprinting. It is non-toxic, biodegradable, photocrosslinking and biocompatible (meaning it allows for normal cell adherence).
Because it's a hydrogel it would be easy to apply.
Furthermore it has already been used to bioprint corals.

i never would have thought of this but it makes so much sense!
having a similar project site that is a few years advanced will also be a useful point of comparison as well as for learning what is more or less likely to work in the long run

It seems like one of the major labour costs is associated with cleaning the bad algae and waiting for the good algae to establish, is it possible to do some form of algae doping prior to deployment, such as submerging the scaffold in a tank and inducing a algae bloom of the desired coralline species

That is so surprising! Never knew sound could be used like this. You guys really think about every aspect. And that is why I respect Mossy Earth so much. I would love to read a full detailed report on the findings and analysis. Waiting eagerly.
