The movement of molecules determines the frequency and amplitude of a sound



Frequency is one of 2 key properties of sound. It is determined by the rate of movement of molecules, set into motion by a vibrating object. This movement it is measured in cycles per second, comonly refered to Hertz [Hz]



Frequency is what gives sound a particular pitch. A person with normal hearing can hear sounds in the range of 20 to 20000 Hz. 



The amplitude of a sound is determined by the maximum displacement of air molecules. This displacement leads to pressure fluctuations in air, which are expressed in units called decibel sound pressure level.



The amplitude determines the loudness of a sound.

Can anyone link to a video that shows this in real scale? I’m trying to visualize how far the displacement of molecules for a given amplitude might be and how that propagates over distance.

This is probably a stupid question but if the peaks in the wave determine how loud a sound is, why don't the troughs mean anything?

Not sure an individual can hear 0 dB SPL (at least, most of them can’t), even refered to 1 kHz 0 dB HL equals something like 7 dB SPL.
