Why New Tires Can Be Dangerous

People often buy new tires and immediately drive them as hard as possible. That's not a good idea. Today we spend a lil bit of time talking about why you need to break in your new tires, like the Michelin Pilot Sport 4S, and just how many miles are needed to get the oil and additives off the top layer of the tire. But what do you want to learn more about? Let me know below!

I normally just sand them until they're completely smooth, it's a quicker process and it looks cool!

I just foam wash them, wipe with a washcloth and then do a burnout. Works everytime.

as a tire technician, unless you're doing your own tires at home, the tires you find in a tire shop are usually 3-6+ months old due to international transport times, so anything about oil is likely not there

The oils are to also piss off package handlers at postal warehouses because it always slips out of out of our gloves

This is why I drive on tires that are 15 years old, none of them new tire problems

Never knew this was a thing. Mashed the gas on my hellcat redeye on the freeway home from installing new Pilot Sport 4Ss. INSANE rear tire squirm! Felt like flat tires in the mud rear end wobbled like crazy. Definitely giving Michelin customer service line an earful Monday morning.

That’s why I only run dry rotted tires 🤷🏽‍♂️

Facts, when I got some pilot sports I was slipping and sliding so much in the first drive that I thought I made a horrible mistake. Now they are easily the best tire I've driven on

I work at a tire shop and I put new tires on a BMW m5 and the guy knew about the release mold they use and said "watch this" and proceeded to do a rolling burnout through 2nd gear. Thats one way to get rid of it

this came in clutch, really didn’t know it and we’re getting new tires soon, thank you for your time online person.

Just do a fat burnout, then rotate your tires and do it again 😂

I work in the Michelin factory that produces the pilot sports they use a silicone derivative to keep the molds from rusting with the steam and to make removal of the tires easier. This substance is non toxic and I’ve personally applied it many times it almost looks and feels like coconut oil. Being that the pilot sports tread pattern is relatively simple compared to many others produced no part of the tire generally has a hard time getting out of the mold so it’s only used as a preventative agent for rusting

I can tell a huge difference when I get new mud tires on my truck at how much it slides in the lane if you slightly try to "swerve back and forth"

I did a 100 yard burnout in my wife's minivan out of the tire store parking lot last fall. They got grippier after a few days.

I worked on a Michelin factory for 10 years in the curing department, and not once were the treads in the molds lubricated. The side wall had oil on them to prevent rust, but that is cleaned out before any tire is cured.

I've never thought of that, but it makes perfect sense. I worked in the auto collision repair industry for 15 years and it was oddly common for a car to get into a collision and the owner (especially if it's totalled) would sigh and say "darn, I just bought new tires too, and now this happened".
