Poland, Finland Ask Germany To Send Leopard 2 Tanks To Ukraine Amid Russia War l Will Berlin Relent?

Poland has joined Finland in saying that it stands ready to supply the German Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine against Russia. Poland's PM Mateusz Morawiecki said he could transfer Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine if a larger ‘Leopard-coalition’ is formed. The Polish PM’s comment comes after Finland said it is ready to supply tanks if Europe agrees to the move. Two Finnish politicians have launched an advocacy group that aims to push Berlin to allow sending Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine. Germany has been reluctant to send modern tanks to Ukraine for its fight against Russia. Berlin fears that Russia might see the transfer of modern tanks as another sign of escalation. President Zelensky, who welcomed the pledge of new fighting vehicles, criticised allies' failure to send 'western-style tanks'. Will Germany send its Leopard tanks to Ukraine?

Poland ans Finland have borders with Russia or its colony Belarus. They have the right to have a different opinion than Germany. This country lacks courage and helps only with one hand tied to its back. Germany should know better how dangerous and treacherous Russia is.

Poland has already delivered more than 300 Polish-made main battle tanks, modernized T 72 and PT-91. Additional 14 Leopard tanks are only logical. The 14 Leopard are of course not a significant reinforcement in contrast to the other 300 tanks. Poland just wants to send a signal to the other NATO countries to finally deliver tanks too. Because hundreds of Leopard, M1 Abrams, Leclercs and Challenger 2 could turn the tide.

I am wondering why the US sent only 50 Bradleys when it has been reported they have 6000 of them in reserve. Why not 200 that would make a real difference?

Germany is all talk. They don't really want to send anything to Ukraine. It's like you have to beg them. Smh😡

In a documentary I saw the main reasons for no Abrams tanks. They go in line with long standing criticisms of the vehicle. America has in storage older M1A1 tanks that have the original armor package but the 120mm gun instead of first 105mm. These tanks would all need engine and transmission overhauls, electronics and optics replacement and a way to add updated FLIR system. The engine is a turbine and uses different fuel other than diesel or gasoline. One large problem is weight. Even the older model without depleted uranium armor upgrade weighs around 65 tonnes. This requires special transport trucks, support vehicles, special bridges. The logistics requirements of the Abrams just does fit the situation in Ukraine. But about Also an armor offensive push by Ukraine would probably be met with the same defense as Ukraine used against Russia. Heavy artillery, drones, and and ATGMs. Folks forget Russia has those too.

Maybe Germans are afraid that these tanks would perform so badly in the real battlefield that noone would want to use them afterwards.

That's very nice of the Fins to say: "We will send Leopard tanks, but only a few and only if Germany sends theirs first, so shame Germany!" A very dirty move. Nevertheless, I agree that Ukraine should get Leopard 2 tanks and that there must be an international coalition to deliver them. In Germany, pressure is mounting for months now to force the chancellor's hand.
There are a few practical problems of course:

There are only a few countries that have large numbers of Leopard 2 tanks and even fewer that could spare some. Finland and Greece are themselves a bit under threat. And then there a quite a few countries that operate old version of the Leopard 2 that are not compatible with the modern Leopard 2 versions.
So that leaves Germany, Poland, Spain, the Netherlands and maybe Sweden or Norway. All of them also operate different versions of the Leopard 2 and not all of them have been upgraded to the A6, A7 or A7+ standard. And than there are mixed standardes like the A6EN.

So the logistics might be more difficult than a local Finnish polician tries to make you believe.

The greater our support and speed of supply, the sooner the Ukrainian people can return to their homes, the sooner peace will come! I am confident that we should increase our support, without a doubt, despite the hesitancy of other countries to supply. This is a small help for our country and an opportunity for peace and freedom for Ukraine!
