Should the Electoral College: 1) Remain as-is, 2) Be reformed, 3) Be abolished and replaced

Legal Eagle is almost more of an activist than a lawyer.

What people generally forget is that this is the United STATES of America, not the United People of America. Getting rid of the EC would lead to small states becoming irrelevant in national politics.

Legal Eagle must not have looked at any previous elections before this video.

It is based on the idea that minority states have a voice against larger states. It gives a stronger vote to states that have a lesser population by attributing one vote per representative and senator. Politics in every state is different and giving a stronger voice to states that would otherwise be drowned out totally. There would be no reason to appeal to the "flyover" states of it were purely popular votes.

Legal eagle is simply showing is blatant bias again. Was it abused for racist reasons? Yes. That doesn't necessarily mean that the electoral college is a racist system. It most certainly is not today. I can abuse all sorts of things for different reasons than they may been put in place for. That doesn't remove it's original purpose.

Well, to abolish it you need a Constitutional Convention (which NEITHER side wants). You can't abolish it with the stroke of a pen. No state is idiot enough to willingly give up their representation, especially small states that KNOW the bigger ones will ignore them worse than they do already. It's in the self-interest of the flyovers to protect themselves from becoming irrelevant fiefs of a few big cities.

Dems: End electorial college! Popular vote only!
*trump wins popular vote*
Dems: *surprise face*

If it was a pure popular vote, we'd get candidates that pandered purely to urban sensibilities, while ignoring the rest of the country.

WE ARE A REPUBLIC! The Electoral College ensues that even small states like New Hampshire have a voice instead of being drowned out by the noise of Major Cities like New York City, Austin and Los Angeles. The people in small states have a right to determine how they would like to be governed. A farmer out in Iowa doesn't want to be governed like a new yoker.

What nonsense revisionism. Sometimes he has good legal arguments but his ideology rewrites history. The whole purpose was to balance rural and urban interest just like the house and the senate. The rural interest was not just the slave owning south when the college was created. Devin is off his rocker here, he should stick to law and not ideobabble revisionism.

If you read the federalist papers the idea had nothing to do with slavery. It was the same reason for a bicameral legislator. Yes there were some arguing that with slavery in the south there was unlikely to be consensus but it was ONE argument for it not the ONLY argument for the electors. To get to this nonsense you have to ignore Federalist 10, the bicameral legislature and why it was there, and practically all the federalist powers and only listen to one Madison's argument in his compromise. The electoral college is due to prevent the tyranny of the majority. The founders didn't want a simple majority to decide everything. The bicameral legislature and the electors for President were to prevent the tyranny of majority not preserve slavery. What a biased take.

I dont like how so many people conflate democracy and its different forms. Not all democracies are the same and not all are good. Direct democracy (which is what is being argued for) is one of the worst forms of democracy as it allows mob rule to dictate policy. Combine that with the uninformed/misinformed voter and the gradual power shift towards the executive and youll have a great recipe for a dictatorship.

I don’t want Los Angeles and NYC to dictate what we do.

The problem is, the federal government is not supposed to be what it is today. Heads of state is the right term, the Governors were the ones in charge, and the federal government was just supposed to be a coalition and a system to provide pathways to peace.
The closest current system is the EU, because each state in the US is equivalent to a country.
The EU isn't doing so well, however, not least because they have whole swaths that just weren't listened to in their systems.
And frankly, the reason so many hated Brexit was because it showed what could happen in the US, should a state decide to leave.

You should now do a pro electoral college video from a conservative to be balanced. Devon is a well known California leftist, his political videos make no secret about that, especially the ones regarding anything to do with trump

Tyranny of the Majority....Fantastic idea. Shame someone didn't think of that a couple hundred years ago. Oh wait.

Anyone who wants to abolish the electoral college has no idea what it actually does, and those who do want it gone because it doesnt produce the results they want. We have a serious education problem in the country right now
