How Kamala Harris and the Democrats lost the 2024 US election | UpFront

In a historic political comeback, former President Donald Trump has been re-elected for a second term in office, despite facing multiple felony charges and widespread criticism of his alleged authoritarian tendencies.

His Democratic opponent, Vice President Kamala Harris, failed to persuade voters, with many claiming she didn’t distance herself enough from the unpopular incumbent President Joe Biden.

So, what went wrong for the Democrats in their campaign? And what will a second Trump presidency look like?

This week on UpFront, Marc Lamont Hill speaks with associate professor of political science at Fordham University Christina Greer, co-host of Useful Idiots Katie Halper, reporter and co-founder of Drop Site News Ryan Grim, and former Deputy Chief of Staff under the Trump administration Emma Doyle.

When she brought Liz Chenney, I knew she was done..

The biggest blunder to me was when she said “nothing comes to mind” when asked how she’d be different than Biden.

The knee-jerk misogyny charge is weak and utterly unconvincing. I was proud to vote for a woman this year, but I chose the one who obviously has a mind and a conscience, Jill Stein. Can you imagine what would happen in a debate between Stein and Harris? ...like Mike Tyson boxing a toddler.

How she lost? Incredibly bad candidate. No ideas, no policy, inability to articulate a message.

Here we go again. I consider myself an Independent with moderate leanings to the left but this is what drives me crazy about the Democratic Party: they waste time looking for who to blame and what went wrong instead of regrouping and listening to the concerns of the country as a whole and coming up with a way to reinvent themselves. Enough already! I was told there are 2 things you shouldn’t complain about: what you CAN change and what you CAN’T. If you can change it, do it; if you can’t, move on!

Harris’s unwavering support for Israel during the "war" in Gaza was a critical miscalculation. In Pennsylvania, 34% of voters would have been more likely to support her with an arms embargo, with similar figures in Georgia (39%) and Arizona (35%)—while only 7%, 5%, and 5% were less likely. By ignoring this clear path to victory, she lost crucial young, Muslim, and undecided voters.

Not even considering Michigan, this stance could have given Harris a net gain of 900k votes in PA (19 EVs), 864k in GA (16 EVs), and 350k in AZ (11 EVs)—adding 46 electoral votes and bringing her total to 272 vs. 226. This costly oversight was avoidable.

How did this happen? 15+ million illegal immigrants. Over 100 Billion dollars for foreign wars. At the same time, I walk down the street in downtown Dallas and can't stop tripping over the homeless Americans. That's how!

Katie sounds a lot better tonight. I hope she is feeling better. I know she was sick recently.
Also this is a way better panel than CNN and MSNBC normally do.
And Marc is always good to listen to as well.

I'm a democrat that stayed home. I was completely turned off by Kamala's handling of pro-palestinian protestors, the fact that she's a former prosecutor and yet she refused to hold Israel accountable for breaking international law regarding the genocide in Gaza, and the fact that she said she would do nothing differently than Joe Biden even though she was campaigning as the candidate that represented change. If she had showed some integrity and stood up to Joe Biden and demanded an arms embargo, I would've voted for her. As far as I'm concerned, she has the blood of 43, 000 Palestinians on her hands. Was totally disgusted by her campaign.

So glad to see Katie Harper getting recognition for her outstanding journalism. She is devoted to the truth even if it’s at the cost of being labelled by her own community.

It doesn't actually make any difference whether the President is Republican or Democrat. The genius of the American ruling class is that it has been able to make the people think that they have had something to do with the electing of presidents for 200 years when they've had absolutely nothing to say about the candidates or the policies or the way the country is run.-Gore Vidal

The problem is that between 11 to 17 million Americans did not vote in this election -- they couldn't vote or stayed on the couch. We are still ignoring them, not caring to ask "Why did they not vote?" and "How do we reach them?".

Trump is Trump. A comic, media genius. What you see is what you get. When you peel away the layers of who Kamala is, there's no center.
