I agree. The best way to teach something is not exactly how you do it yourself. You have to learn the standard way before you can make you little changes and make it your own technique that works for you. Not everyone will be able to understand the specific way of how you do it, because you’ve changed it to fit how you work!

The best answer to that question is “I’m teaching you the tried and true methods. These techniques will help you learn how to achieve your desired result. But eventually, you will find other techniques to achieve your desired results. This only comes with time, trial and error, which builds your skills and confidence in your craft.”

When your students point out your variation you can always tell them when they master the way you teach it and finish the class, they can find their own flair 😄

Possibly a good way to explain it too, is that you have way more time and experience on your hands. You have had time to learn how to read and work your clay. They need to know the basics before they can build those same instincts 🤷🏼‍♀️

You could also explain that once you master the basic technique, then you can use shortcuts. Saying do as i say, and not as i do is incredibly disenguious and not really the whole story. Your skill allows you to skip the basic steps, which they need to understand first.
