We like to do the Left Right Front drill in butterfly breathing to the sides on the Left and Right strokes. It allows you to recover more vertically that is what we want some swimmers (with flexible shoulders) to imitate during the full stroke. Swimmers that have flexible shoulders can benefit from a vertical recovery.

So whether you’re doing a 111, 222, 333 or 444 drill try breathing to the sides and focus on keeping a low profile (chin to the water) on your full stroke. Tori Miller does an outstanding job on this drill!

When you instruct swimmers in this drill, what is the main point of emphasis that you like to focus on in terms of how this drill relates to swimming butterfly? Is the emphasis on reducing the delay before initiating the pull? Or something different?
