I dare say it's true, here in my university town I can easily pick out the exchange students from the US as well by their dress style and the hairstyles. Also the university shop here does sell sweatshirt with the university logo, but only to foreigners... An other dead giveaway here is a bike helmet by the way. Whatever you do, do not wear a bike helmet while biking!

The style of clothing is likely only an issue in Italy, ifff it even is an issue anywhere.

It depends on the country, most Northern European countries like the Netherlands, UK and Scandinavian countries have a very similar clothing style to the USA. Perhaps a bit less athletic wear and sometimes a bit more formal. However Southern European countries like Italy are far more formal when it comes to their daily outfits. But hoodies and even baseball caps are really common, except perhaps wearing running shoes. It is better to wear fashion sneakers that look good with regular clothing.

I guess that as long as you don’t wear MAGA-hats, you’ll be alright. 😄 That’s not particularly popular in Europe - or at least in the Northern part, where I live (Denmark). I assume it’s the same in the south.
Your behavior is probably more of a give away than your clothes. 😊

You can wear anything you want in Europe. I think this man has a personal problem, cause no matter what he wears, he'll always look like a tourist 🤣
