Tourists are often distracted by being in a strange place, unfamiliar with the language, unable to function as easily as the locals, so that's why they make easier targets. Also tourists are more likely to be carrying more cash, passports, driving licenses with them, making for richer pickings!

I'm from Germany and especially younger people wear all of the things he mentioned 😆

It all depends where in Europe are you. People wear different things in Greece and in Norway haha

Most important is NOT to wear a wrong football jersey in the area where it does not belong, you can get in big problems.

well if you're in Germany and you would do what walter said, you would think nearly every German were a tourist

I, who am a typical Swede, tall blond and have blue eyes have traveled a lot in the Caribbean, Mexico Belize Brazil, and trying to look like a local would just be pathetic, but what I always think about is to always look calm and confident, that I know exactly where I am and what I'm doing, no matter how insecure I really am, and I never carry more than I can afford to lose

Everything this guy is saying is pure nonsense. You can wear any clothes you like. The only thing you need to remember is that in some places a specific dress code is required (churches, museums), for example, short pants or a tank top are not welcome in the church.

You can ignore pretty much all of that in the UK, but if you want to avoid being identified as an American, obviously avoid things branded with US sports teams or universities.

If you are in a tourist area, no matter what country, people (who benefit from it) will recognize you as a tourist no matter what clothes you wear.
In Austria I once saw a young guy with a t-shirt that said: I am not a tourist - i live here.

In Europe as elsewhere, there are "tourist traps": Restaurants in very good locations but where the food is bad and the price high (the managers don't care, their clientele is made up of tourists who won't come back to the place for the most part), completely bogus souvenir shops and obviously pickpockets in busy places. Tourists who really look like tourists are more easily directed to these places.

I'm not sure that there are particular clothes that "make tourists", it's a set. Already if you speak English with a loud American accent, you are immediately spotted. If you get sunburned on your face in summer in southern European countries, it's because you're not from around here and you don't know how to prepare or protect your skin (it's caricatural and moreover it is bad for health). Wearing shorts around town to visit historical sites is also not very smart. The shorts are worn at the beach or when we walk in nature, in town we try to be a little more "dressed".

As a tourist, you are always more at risk than a local. You don't know all the customs, carry more valuables and are more vulnerable on vacation. But the clothing tips are completely useless.

Sticking around at touristy places makes you automatically a tourist no matter how much you try to blend in because locals do not go to the tourist 'hot spots' in general. They needed to show them to their acquaintances/friends/family a thousand times already and are somehow done with doing it over and over again. 😂

What he means is you are an easy target for pick pockets because you will carry more money, passports and cameras also taxi drivers could take you for a ride around to get extra money for the fare and you can be short changed in shops and bars.

That Khaki pants thing is real. When I was in my twenties I had a summer job in the US, a youth exchange related thing, there were a lot of foreigners there and were were all a bit confused by the request to bring khaki pants to wear at work. I didn't even know what those were at the time.

I feel the original video goes a little too far, tourists are usually more identifiable by behaviour than clothing. People will probably notice things being worn out of season, of course. Wearing a baseball cap in the UK in January would be a little bit weird, as we don't get much sunlight during that month, you'd want to wear something warmer, like a proper hat or a woolly hat but people wear sports clothes out and trainers, again season might affect some things since the UK gets very cold in winter and hotter than most people would think in the summer (mostly due to humidity than actual heat).

What would make it stand out more in the UK is if you're always loud, always smiling and not queueing up properly when paying for things. Brits don't always smile, nor do we feel a need to necessarily fake smiles most of the time, it is not necessary to us. Obviously there are bigger give-aways like carrying cameras everywhere or taking pictures of everything on a phone, but those are kind of the extremely obvious tourist behaviours that probably don't need to be said.

Okay, I wear kaki pants. Both long ones, and short ones in the Summer. And I have never been mistaken for an American!

I’m German and I’m wearing a baseball cap and a hoodie. And lots of people here wearing sports shoes 😅

He has it all wrong. In Portugal many young people wear baseball caps. Lots of people where khaki trousers and t-shirts or sweat shirts with American logos. It may depend on which country you go to in Europe and, obviously if you visit a church you have to be more careful about the clothes to wear. To be honest these "Don't do.." videos are incorrect most of the time.
