XO Hunter allows a time frame to rescue as many crew members as possible before ordering the hatch be closed. The captain on the other hand will order the immediate closing of the hatch from the moment the submarine takes in water. He has prepared to sacrifice all the trap crew members.

This is why part of the end of this movie is so bad, when the captain stops the missile launch, everybody, is like wooo yeah 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉, and the music sounds like "we are proud of ourselves", in that moment the movie forgets these men and forget the fact that some men of the tripulation wanted to start a nuclear war
