This is my first attempt at mig welding some aluminium.
I wanted to see how it compares to tig.

My names Matt Urch and I own and run Urchfab welding and fabrication.
I specialise in custom automotive fabrication from building roll cages to complete one off builds.
I built the worlds most unique and oldest drift car known as the drift rod which can be found on my channel.
So if your into grinding, welding, fabricating, drifting, going fast etc, your in the right place!

Thanks again. Can't afford a tig welder for a while but I have a second mig welder I may as well convert and have a play.

I got a spool gun for my Everlast mig welder. It's good when you don't want to worry about tight bends in the cable and such. I'm really enjoying your channel. Good mix of topics.

I have yet to play at welding aluminum. This refreshed my desire to try it. On my farm, I tend to weld things to be overbuilt. It would be good to learn how to weld things to be both lightweight and sturdy.

Great video mate. That tig weld was beautiful mate, perfect 👌. Ya mig welds are great. Only wish I could get to that stage. Practice practice practice I guess 👍

Nice one Matt we were talking just today at work about aluminium mig welding, to be fair that looks much better than I expected it to look but like you say if you’ve already got the TIG why bother as you’re never going to improve on the TIG. But if you only had a mig it could be an option. Cheers Trev 👍

Mig was great but tig was brilliant. Good vid.

Great comparison video. On your timelapse/sped up sections, shutting off autofocus will help make them flow better. Really enjoying your channel, keep it up!

Great video Matt. With regards to preheating, my mig has a hot start and crater fill function built into the 4T mode to overcome the bunching up on the start and craters at the end. If your mig has pulse, then it's not a low end machine so you might want to check to see if yours does as well. Agree though if using 2T you need to preheat. Cheers

Matt, try a spool gun for aluminium they work very well. Good for repairs and long runs. Tig is just to slow for large projects.

Ah... You did bring up the spool gun. I'm actually pretty impressed with how well this setup worked though. I suck at welding aluminum other than Tig. I kinda wish I'd have bought a Tig setup instead of the spool gun when I bought my welder. I had my reason and as they say, hind sight is always 20/20. Lol

Great work. Does your IF 220 mig have a hot start function in mig mode, I know it has slope up. If it does, can the hot start time be adjusted, thanks.

Anyone else chose this video cause he seems to be the only YouTuber who knows how to spell aluminium 😅

Spool guns help SO much on wire feed alum. With that said, Mig is much faster then Tig on Alum. But if a life is on the line (or in the seat). I only use Tig. GJ mate. Keep em coming.

Good comparison, I reckon MIG is good for 3mm up ali when its maybe a bigger job like a roof rack or trailer bed, TIG would take ages to weld up something like that. I've never tried MIG for ali though as most of my stuff is 1.5 -2.5mm and small jobs so easy to do on the bench.
