I got a ride in a B-17 some years ago, for $450. Worth every penny to hitch a 30-minute ride in one of the most iconic warbirds of all time! I sat in the nosegunner's seat and "strafed" herds of cattle we flew over.

“Why is it called the Flying Fortress?”
It’s heavy guns in the air.

The Sperry ball turret was cramped, providing no room for the gunner, the shortest crew member, to wear a parachute.

Remember, there was a gunner who went through 104 missions and survived the war

B-17 gunners in real life: FIRE EVERYTHING ON THAT PLANE!
B-17 Gunners in War Thunder: I ain’t shooting that plane until I see the white in his eyes.

It’s funny we were just talking about how my great grandpa was B-17 ball turret

My grandpa -BT on a B-24 - was always a bit sour to B-17s.

"We carried more, we carried it further, and we carried it faster, but everyone was always talking about the 17s"

Lmao, they pulled out one of the B17 bombs in front of the house on the other side last year.
Yes, I live in Germany.

Reminds me of the LAAT from episode 2 Attack of the Clones

Fun fact if you ever go to Las Vegas you can pay to get in a turret that's mounted on a stand and fire off a couple hundred rounds.

This plane reminds me of that one mission in Call of Duty World at War.

The first scene made me think of Star Wars😅

The ball turret can be easily removed of the landing gear is not working

Believe it or not the B-17 was once time in Yugoslav air force. There are two rumors about that airplane. One says it was on Sombor airfield for couple if days, and after that was sent to USSR. The second one says that B-17 was in service for one year in Yugoslav air force for one year. After it was sent to musseum. There is a rumor that is in Belgrade's museum of aviation (now Serbia).
What is true, that is a good question.

Could not retract like that of the B-24, so if you got stuck in it and your plane had to do a wheels up landing you were pretty screwed!😮

So cool that this and the WW2 dogfights in general inspired George Lucas!

Ahem, what about the fact that almost every city in japan was leveled, many more deaths and deviation to civilians than those measly atomic bombs.

From my mother's sleep I fell into the State,
And I hunched in its belly till my wet fur froze.
Six miles from earth, loosed from its dream of life,
I woke to black flak and the nightmare fighters.
When I died they washed me out of the turret with a hose.
