My wife's grandfather was a ball turret gunner in the B17....shot down and bailed out...he was a German POW for 2 years...amazing stories...amazing man

The radio operator position looks the least uncomfortable but I'd take anything over the ball turret. Must've been dreadful to sit in there for hours.

It’s hard to believe that ten brave men climbed aboard each these magnificent, yet terrifyingly fragile aircraft, to fly into hostile airspace and over enemy territory into a maelstrom from hell. And to do so day after day, knowing their number’s coming up, and soon, took a special breed of men. If 500 of these planes took to the air for a single mission, and 200 didn’t return, that’s 2000 men lost. The guy you ate chow with. The guy in the next bunk. The guys you went on a three day pass with last month. All gone.
May God save us from such carnage.

My father piloted 39 missions in a G model including two Schweinfurt raids. And in 1945, he was squadron leader in Operation Chowhound.

Imagine being in a B-17 that was out of control from damage. Trying to find the nearest hatch while being thrown around.

I took a flight on the B-17 "909" 2 years before it crashed. Walking from the rear to the nose during flight was difficult and LOUD. I have very high praise for all the men who flew on these flying beer cans.

I’m glad you’ve gotten to experience the inside of an operational one, static displays just aren’t the same thing. Hopefully you got to hear and smell it, even better, fly in it.

So that’s what it looks like where my Dad was during World War Two. Master Technical Sargent, responsible for the maintenance of The Flying Fortress Fifty Caliber Machine Guns. Flying position, tail gunner. Very interesting, thanks for sharing.

Back when America's military was 2nd to none!. Now they're teaching them about pronouns...smh...just sad.
