Full Video:

Restored footage from WW2 showing a US B-17 Flying Fortress taking fire from a German Bf 110G. I've enhanced the footage to 4k, 60fps, AI colorized, and added sound design.

Take the bullet cracks and whizzes with a grain of salt. The original footage contained so much noise and scratches that it was hard to determine what was gunfire.

Dear Gaijin: notice the wings do not break off like legos after the 3rd round hits

The BF-110's pilot was surgical in his approach. He took out the tail gunner, then belly gunner, then started working on the engines from left to right.

Bro, the engines didn’t even show any signs of punishment after taking those shells. That is some extreme respect to the engineers

I wasn’t expecting that Flying Fortress is actually a flying fortress in real life

It’s crazy how much more modern it looks in color

One of my Uncles was a gunner on a B24 in Europe. In early 1942, he had flown on three missions and his plane was shot down, he bailed out, and only after the war did he find out he was the only survivor from the crew and the only survivor from his gunnery class. He lived with the terrible consequences of PTSD until he died in 1995. He was such a sweet and gentle man.

Man, being a tail/ball gunner must have been terrifying

This is absolutely insane. My great grandfather was a tail gunner in a B-17 (crash landed in the North Sea, part of the failed Warsaw Airlift, etc) and I have no clue how I exist today. These guys and my grandfather had a survival rate of 5-6 missions and I recall him telling me he participated in 26. I wish I had the chance to talk to him again.

people really do not understand how absolutely insane is to have this footage.

I know everyone is commenting on the ball and tail gunner but can we not also appreciate those engines took multiple direct cannon hits and are still chugging. Those old radials were absolute beasts. There’s one story of a Navy pilot flying a hellcat in the pacific making it back to his carrier. He had no oil left and had multiple cylinders shot out and missing. Still running.

When the guns are pointed towards the ground, it means that the ball turret gunner entered back into the aircraft!! The position you see in the footage shows that the ball turret lined up the hatch for the gunner to be able to enter!!

Look at the damage it absorbed though. Truly a flying fortress.

Better camera quality than all videos titled "real ghost caught on tape" combined

Kind of tough to watch, you can just imagine the absolute fear and hopelessness that crew would of felt

I know 30mm filled with High Explosive but damn it can’t even fully destroy the engine is beyond me. Truly a Flying Fortress.

Holy shit, they weren't kidding when they named that a flying fortress. That thing took a beating.

My dad was a B-17 bomber pilot. He was shot down near Vienna, Austria. Watching this makes me realize how terrifying it must have been for them. Three survived, dad thought that he & the co-pilot were the only survivors. We found out recently that the tail gunner survived. Dad didn't live to find that out. Dad passed away from his injuries in 1999.

My great grandfather was a ball turret gunner in WW2. he was shot down twice, both times surviving. He was a better man than i ever will be. RIP Albert Wood
