This video is a beginner's guide to OneDrive - what it is, how to set it up and how to use it and some more top tips on getting the best out of OneDrive.

So what is OneDrive? OneDrive is Microsoft’s cloud storage offering. You get Google Drive from Google, you get iCloud from Apple, and you get Dropbox from Dropbox.

If you’re new to the OneDrive or cloud storage in general, what benefits do you get from storing your files, folders and photos in cloud storage? Why not just store everything on your computer hard drive?

Well, there are three main benefits to using OneDrive:

► What happens if you have lots of important word documents, excel spreadsheets and years' worth of family photos stored on your computer - and then the computer hard drive fails. Without a backup, you’ve lost everything. If you store everything in OneDrive and your computer hard drive fails - you haven’t lost anything because everything is stored in the Microsoft cloud.

► Secondly, if you have all your data stored on a PC at home or a laptop and you are out and about, or on holiday and you need to access something urgently - without cloud storage, you can’t because you’re not with your With Onedrive, you access all of your data from any PC with an internet connection or even on your phone or tablet. PC. As an example, I recently went on holiday and wanted to hire a car, but I’d forgotten to take my driving license with me. Fortunately, I have a scanned copy of my driving license in my OneDrive so I was able to open the OneDrive app on my phone and show the car rental company. Nice and easy.

► The third example is more geared towards businesses. But if you want to share some information. Maybe you’re working on a project and you need to share presentation files with colleagues. If the presentation is on PowerPoint stored on your computer - you probably will email it backwards and forwards. With OneDrive, you can easily share your documents with other people.

So three great reasons why OneDrive is a great option - but the fourth reason is that it’s free! Microsoft gives you a Onedrive account with 5GB of data for free. To give you an idea of how much 5GB is - it’s about 2000 photos.

So get yourself a nice warm drink and enjoy the video.

Finally a well rounded and succinct description. Just subscribed, feel I can learn alot from your channel. Spent hours trying to sync my laptop, phone and Ipad. My lower task bar had the 'cloud' greyed out, and wouldn't let me sign on because I use Hotspot for everything, and it wanted WiFi. Btw love the accent and the beard 🧔

The most difficult thing is how to organise your files and folders and your work. Things start from one place and end up somewhere else because of the way things transpire and so many other factors. Then we don't remember where we have saved what and which file and folder is current or for what purpose and which one is up to update.. Things can get crazy.

Thanks Jonathan an excellent presentation and introduction to OneDrive. Is there any way I can automatically backup OneDrive files to an external hard drive and then on set times will only backup changes to files?

Do you have any suggestions on how NOT to sync folders from OneDrive? seems they provide this "choose folders" feature under settings, but it's not working, if you de-select any folder, it will remove it from your hard drive, so irritating. thx,

As usual Johnathan, a succinct video. I've just updated to a new Windows 11 pc from a 14yrs old Lenovo, now operating Windows 10 22h2. I've always tried to keep everything on my pc, but in truth I've kept a load of 'rubbish'. I use iTunes, iCloud, Spotify, and I do have One Drive, with 1tb storage, 'compliments' of Office 365, but don't really know how to use them. Do I need all of the various Cloud systems on my pc ? Trying to set up my new pc, and iTunes tried to sync 24, 000 photos !!! Where did that come from ? I only have around 6, 000 photos, tops. Anyway, your tutorial helped.

So my mom has outlook and it says her storage is full. We clicked where it told us to free up space and then we had this whole ordeal logging into Microsoft. When we went into the one drive app we tried to find how to delete photos however we could not select any of the photos shown and it kept showing that they were uploading I think. We though we were deleting the photos off of one drive but apparently we were deleting off of the photo app as well. Her emails won’t go Through and we’ve deleted a bunch of photos already. Can anyone help?

Hi! I have a problem at mycompany that I hope you can help me with. We use a single OneDrive account across multiple devices for convenience. However, recently after receiving a new laptop, I have noticed that anyactivity I perform on my desktop is visible to my colleague on her computer and the other way around. How do I stop that?

Great video. For a small company (5 users/laptops, no domain, just a windows workgroup) we want to use onedrive business and share folders with data. Is the info in your video enough to set it up this way?
Of is there a white paper available to set this up the most efficient way? They are using it already but have problems seeing each other files and data.

Hi..Have scoured YouTube for a tutorial that covers "what happens to existing content within the MyPC folders of Desktop, Pictures and Documents, when OneDrive is set to backup those folders..Is the MyPC content 'moved' or 'copied' to OneDrive ? If copied and all folders in OneDrive are set to "always keep a copy on this device", has one effectively doubled the hard disk space utilised on one's PC ?
