Why EVERYONE Is Switching To SONY

These are my thoughts on why a lot of people are switching to Sony. Yes, a lot. Not everyone, but it is significant.
I tried to talk about the reasons I feel Sony have been in the lead for quite a while. It is no doubt that Sony have been doing incredible things in the mirrorless camera space because they have had a brilliant head start in the aps-c and full frame space.

What are your thoughts?

something else I think helped was Sony being very forward thinking with the E-Mount and allowing other companies to make cheaper more affordable glass for their cameras. It lowered some of the barrier to entry to newcomers wanting to get into the space. Cannon glass is great but my god the RF glass is expensive.

Another factor for Sony dominance: Advertising. The amount of YouTubers pushing Sony gear is at an all time high. Free gear, free lenses, free all-expenses paid vacations to Sony Kando. It's a good time to say good things about Sony, and that in turn influences millions of people.

I switched after a lifetime of Canon when they restricted 3rd party lenses. I love my Sonys and my Sigma lenses. Best switch I’ve ever made. No looking back.

What we have learned over the past few years is that you don't need to be fooled by the competition for the best camera specs from the manufacturers. Remember, you don't need the latest technology to create great content, it can come from inside your head.

It's kind of crazy to not mention how much more Sony spent on influencer marketing and big events where they were flying out groups of filmmakers and straight up giving gear away. Everyone knows it was not completely organic.

Ever since I held the Sony A7iii I have never thought of switching back to any other brand but still learn about other cameras because every brand has its score sections

I switched from Canon to Fuji in 2018, leaving the eternal rivalry between Canon, Nikon and Sony behind. Since then I am happy with my Fuji X bodies and my GFX flagship for high detailed landscape photography.

as a long time Canon user I welcomed the most recent craze, because everyone switched, there was huge selection of 2nd hand lens for really low prices, it was a great time to acquire some new gear, after that I upgraded from 6D to R6 and I'm very happy with it. I tried Sony, it didn't really feel right in my hand, the colours looked meh (I know they can be fixed in post, but still). I mostly do event/sports photo, I never shoot video, so I don't even know what specs does it have in this matter. The only thing that I don't really like is Canon not allowing 3rd parties to manufacture RF mount lens (although some exceptions are appearing). If I'd make enough money and shoot less fast-paced stuff, my next upgrade would be Fuji GFX gear.

Bro you forgot Sony A6000, it's wasn't A7siii that brought in users, it was A6000 that camera was legendary. I remember back in 2015 everyone was talking about this camera, even till 2021 people were still buying it.

Started with Canon in 2003... and despite all the tech battles between the top 5 players in the market over the last 20 years, I've remained loyal to Canon, and it has really paid off for me in terms of savings by not jumping from one ship to another ship and then back again. I can't tell you the number of Canon Photographers I know who jumped ship and went over to Sony and then back to Canon... selling their premium glass lenses, just to return to those same glass lenses 2-3 years later. I've always purchased good glass, and my camera bodies, I usually wait 1-2 years from the time of release to get al the bugs worked out and see the fixes in the firmware updates.... so when I make the final purchase, I know the bugs have been worked out, and I'm also able to save save $1, 000 (or more) on my full frame camera body, because the new digital camera bodies ( just like PC's ) depreciate by 1/3 their original value in the first 2 years of ownership.

I've got to say. I had doubts wether to switch to Sony.. I came from the D850 and was always very satisfied with Nikon's Professional Service so i decided to stay with Nikon.
I bought the z7ii and it took me a few weeks to get used to mirrorless but the quality of the Z mount glass is just beyond amazing. So when the Z9 came out i decided to buy that and keep the z7ii as my backup. And i have to say, they regularly do firmware updates which improves autofocus a lot and i really don't understand why sony isn't doing this??

I'm glad i stuck with the brand i started with, i don't really get the Nikon hate as well, when i started Sony was the camera for amateurs, guess they turned that around by now..
But still all major brands offer excellent camera's and it's just the tools that you work with. A good carpenter can create beautiful things with any brand of hammer, a good guitarist can play nice music on any guitarist. Thus a good photographer should be able to create beautiful images on any camera.. :)

Great video! I'm a Fuji user; all my friends shoot Sony. Something I do love about Fuji is that they typically release a firmware update on a quarterly bases, even for my XT-3 which came out in 2018. Some of the updates are bug fixes, but a lot are enhancements/new features, even for a 5 year old camera.

Honestly; I feel like everyone has been switching to RED lately… it’s like RED went after all the Sony content creators hard in the last couple months

You forgot the Sony A7rii, that camera was legendary. Not that Sony wasn't making great cameras before that. A mount delivered some awesomeness the A900 & A850 were really good, the A99 took the SLT route and the A99ii & A77ii are still fantastic cameras till date. I have shot on Sony's from 2010 and it's not just the innovations or technology, it was clever marketing that Sony nailed.

I’ve stuck with my Nikon D5 and as the cost of used F mount glass has dropped, I’ve now built up to a bag of pro glass.
I did look at the Sony bodies, but a lack of used equipment would mean £10k+ investment to buy a body and equivalent f2.8 glass new.
I mainly shoot stills and am happy with the performance of my Nikon gear, so will not be changing any time soon.

One of things that's a bit irritating about these brand comparisons is that they all focus on the video specifications and not how well the camera shoots stills in various environments. If you want a video camera that records in 8k infinitely at a ridiculously high frame rate, buy the right video camera, not a camera that also happens to shoot video. Most of us don't publish on YouTube. And no, I am not switching to Sony and give up all the glass I've invested.

Failed to mention Nikon major contributions on mirrorless of providing significant software upgrades to their cameras after release adding significant improvements which made buyers question why other major camera companies weren’t doing same.

LUMIX shooter here 🤚🏽 and I’m not going nowhere. I enjoy watching other Youtubers with their preferred camera brands. I just enjoy the content and knowledge they give. Even if I had to start fresh, I’d go, Lumix I just see them as being very underrated, but they’re such powerful cameras. Ibis, color, feature packed, consistent software updates no overheating weather sealed. List goes on.

Replaced our A1 with two Z9's. As good as Sony stuff is, Nikon has stepped up with the Z9 and Z8 and there are simply the best color science out there, not to mention the best hybrid cameras. Of course everyone has great cameras, but Nikon has lenses that are truly exotic and beyond what Canon and Sony have for now.

I am a Nikon shooter. Nikon colors are the top for me. Overall the camera is honest, I can use old lenses i own, and it is a overall good camera for my needs. I don't do cinema, but I have video fully usable just out of the camera, without a lot of post production. For me, it is a good compromise. For sure it miss most professional features, but it is honest for the price.
