I find quite often that user forums (not Linux specific, but in general) you can ask a question and commonly get back: "Why do you want to do THAT?", as if somehow these powerful machines called computers can only be used in a limited number of ways to match whatever paradigm the "answerer" thinks is right. I don't bother anymore.

Internet forums are full of people who, when someone asks a question, don't give any helpful answer but instead tell them to get or buy something completely different.

Finally, someone tells the truth. I use both Linux and Windows, amd for what it's worth, have never bothered with asking for help with Linux. YouTube definitely is your friend, since it doesn't belittle one's lack of knowledge. Most users just want things ti work - after all, your device is either a tool box or a toy, or both.

Had a friend once who used Linux. He wanted to hook his computer up to the big screen to watch a movie.
He sat 2 hours twindling with the correct CODEC, because for some straaange reason nothing worked.
After 2 hours I said "enough" and we used my windows machine and watched the movie in peace.

For me the main problem with linux is:
1) I gain a lot of time because things work really fast in Linux.
2) I loose all that "gained time" trying to find a solution for something that doesn't work out of the box (and used to work perfectly in Windows).

So te result is: I DON'T DO ANYTHING FASTER THAN WINDOWS, AND AT THE END, I FEEL MORE FRUSTRATED.
If you use Linux for things that come working right out of the box, is amazing.
If you find something that doesn't work in Linux and try to solve it .... get ready for some long hours wasted.

... and no, I'm not a newbie.

I used Linux as my main OS for many years starting in 2004, until a few years ago, just because I was intrigued and didn't care for Windows. You totally speak the truth. Back in the mid 00s, Ubuntu rose to power and it looked like things were going to get better, but they failed miserably for a variety of reasons. I realized Linux didn't have what it takes to capture the mainstream when I ordered a System76 laptop to replace my then 10 year old Dell a few years ago. System76 specializes in Linux-friendly computers. The thing did not run very well with its included distro, and hardware support was pretty bad on Linux for the first year I had it. Out of frustration, I ended up getting a refurbished MacBook and loved it. The Linux community is full of people who think the only way to use a computer is to make it as hard as possible, and I'm just tired of it. There are legitimately people who do not want Linux to become mainstream. It's frustrating.

Most linux users have made the DIFFICULTY of using linux as a part of their own identity. They feel proud that linux is difficult to use

If Linux really were a "free" fully-functional alternative, this OS would have some more than 3% share worldwide

Microsoft and Apple got the desktop 100% right, Linux got it 100% wrong and still gets it wrong. I've known Windows users who have spent 10 years using the OS and have never seen the command line.

sad but true. nothing is free - in case of linux you often pay with your time and frustration

You're doing it all wrong. For Linux Desktop to work you need to constantly repeat the mantra "it works and works and works", simple, have faith and reality will be created.
At least that's what I learned in this delusional article on ZDnet (22 aug 2022),
Last paragraph : "Linux just works. It really is that simple. But more importantly, it works and works and works. So, if you're looking for a way to put the fun, flexibility, ease of use, and reliability back into computing, do yourself a favor and give Linux a try"
Title of article : "Cool things you can do with the Linux desktop that you can't do with MacOS or Windows"

Exaclty how I feel, I have installed linux many times just to uninstall and go back to windows. Simply because everything works!!!

For just getting things done, Windows and Mac OS are just fine. Linux is for people with time to tinker, the Linux forums can be quite toxic too.

I use all three

As someone who has completely transitioned to linux, I can say there was a lot of expectation readjustment on my journey. Learned a lot of stuff along the way, but had to embrace doing things differently than I would have liked. I hated Microsoft enough that it was worth the pain it though and now I can't imagine ever going back. Definitely not for those expecting a carbon copy of windows.

I'm a computer user. Learned and experienced beginning with the dos days through windows and all iterations. I dabbled in Linux from the early days of Slackware, that I bricked more systems than I built. For thirty plus years I used what I needed to use to pay the bills. I'm a tech nerd and always love learning. I'm currently a daily Linux user but use Windows on and off mostly to game and master music. I feel your pain though, the Linux world is a wasteland comparable to the wild west days of America. Long story short, Linux has its place, it runs the internet. Do users care, not so much. Stop the hate and just enjoy what you do and celebrate what others do.

Linux users have often struggled for hours in their dark and damp basement flat to get something to work, so they don't have any tolerance for people who haven't had a similar experience and finally solved the problem. Hence the RTFM.

If I can't expect Linux to be substantially better than Windows then it's a complete waste of time to try it.

Hi there! I really enjoy your videos. I have been in IT for over 20 years now and have supported and used windows for the majority of that time. I have personally made the switch from windows to Linux (Ubuntu and Debian) and have been successful in making the transition. Having said that, I absolutely agree that I can't imagine that most of my non-technical users would benefit from the transition. There is definitely a steep learning curve if you want to do much more than just launch a web browser. I am surprised by the lack of help you've received, because for me I've experienced a surprisingly helpful group of people, but maybe it just depends on which forums you find? Not sure, but that would definitely sour the experience!

Anyway, I enjoy your videos and keep up the great work!

You are absolutely right. Linux just eats away your time.

I was a Windows user since 2002. I switched to Linux 4 months ago. I selected Zorin. I am a moderately heavy computer user. The OS easily installed. 90% of my Windows programs work through Wine. I found reasonable replacements for the rest.
