Oculus Rift S VR Headset Review | Is this headset worth it? Should you upgrade?

Here I have my review for the Rift S. Certainly has its positives and negatives. I also ran into a pretty annoying problem, but should you upgrade to the Rift S from your Oculus Rift or HTC Vive? Is this a good headset as a first headset? Just watch it.

I came from PSVR to Rift S
Better tracking, better resolution, more populated online vr games (ps4 vr games are more of single player games..)

they fixed the tracking with the June 28 update :)

It's got to be the best headset if you have a backpack computer. or a laptop in a rucksack

I'm a CV1 and Rift S owner. Two points that made the Rift S a million times better for me was the usability of it, both in simplicity of setup and comfort. I use my VR headsets in a dedicated space but the need for so many USB resources always caused problems. The clarity in resolution, reduced screen door effect, and larger sweet spot makes a big difference. But the largest improvement for me personally is in comfort. I have a flatter wider face and the original Rift pinched the sides of my head. The new design is significantly more comfortable. I would highly recommend this headset for anyone in a similar situation. The Quest even though about the same size as the original Rift fixed this problem by having a soft flex frame.

Thanks for an honest review, Anybody taking a review serious by an unboxing and first impression is not too smart. People should base their decision with a blogger who has spent ample time using the unit, not by the agreed upon going gossip

Dig your video. I love my Rift S. It’s my first VR headset. I also needed help with a technical issue with my Rift S which was a simple fix. Tech support for oculus is awesome. Big big thumbs up for that.

Great review, I am glad you had the time with it to dig in. For being the move it was for current CV1 owners I wish there were less bugs but overall It will certainly be my main HMD now

Thank you for the well done comparison between the headsets.

As a CV1 owner, I’m having the same reservations about the knob on the back, I already feel it “skipping” a few gears when loosening. No headphones, just a terrible decision, taking off with exterior headphones is more annoying than fiddling with the original’s arms.

I do like the visual clarity when in virtual desktop, it’s amazing, and one of my favorite things about the S. I don’t feel when in games it’s that’s big of a graphical difference, but text is definitely easier to read.

Drawing a bow was an issue for me, and when in From Other Suns, messing with the pad on your wrist is pretty bad. Guns close together did give me a slight issue. Not playing in a dark room is annoying, but I get it, cameras.
Maybe some of these can be patched out, I have a few weeks for them to figure it out.

I tried the S at a friends house and am planning on getting one next week, hopefully I don't run into any issues because without them it's almost a perfect headset for me

After a couple of months of use and becoming better at beat saber, I had to tape the headset.
I wear glasses and can’t put the headset close enough to my face, to prevent it from shaking on expert+. Without the tape it shakes so much it becomes hard to see the blocks. The tape tilts/pulls the headset towards my nose.
And yes I tightened the the halo strap until I got a headache, it didn’t prevent the shaking.
Now my rift s looks like s**t but it works great. :)

Thanks man, you really turned my opinion for the better on this. Your opinions were well informed and well thought out, so thanks.

Entirely agree. Lots of naysayers (typically have not tried the S I find) but when you see an S versus your CV1 it's a big step up. I have now sold my day 1 CV1 since the Rift S. it's a world away. Like you, Index on the way but this is the current best headset.

FYI windows has settings that power down some of your PC s USB ports,
To change this
Right click windows icon in task bar,
Click device management,
Double click human interface devices(or usb devices)
Double click each USB port separately
Click the tab on the far right (power management?)
Uncheck top box, and move on to next port repeat on each port

This may help some if not all USB issues,
This is how I got my Vive camera to work again, even though your power and HDMI is still connected if u remove the USB the hmd powers down, this fixs alot of issues with most hmds imo
It helped me did, lemme know if it helps you guys!!!??

I agree with you. after using the Quest and Rift S, the CV1 is prehistoric. Its like looking at a 240p screen with how messy it is.

There is a very common microphone bug that they refuse to acknowledge or fix, unless you get a wireless headset or mic you risk sounding like a robot.
