Don't Feel Like Going To The Gym? Remember THIS

No matter how long you’ve been training, some days, you just don’t feel like going to the gym. You won't feel any gym motivation or desire to lift.

But I’ve realized after years of consistent training that the *thought* of going to the gym is the real obstacle, not the workout itself. The anticipation of discomfort is usually a lot worse than the actual experience.

The physical and mental state that you’re in while you anticipate the workout ahead isn’t the same state you’ll be in once you’re actually doing the work. Once you take action, those negative thoughts start to shut off and everything starts flowing more easily.

If you’re sitting there envisioning your whole workout, all the sets and reps and the physical and mental demands, it can be daunting, but if you break it all down moment by moment, it isn’t nearly as bad.

The reality is, you can’t do the entire workout as a whole. You can only ever do one rep at a time.

In the moment of performing that one rep, if you absorb yourself in all the sensations involved, it can actually be meditative. It can even be pleasurable if you think about how that physical discomfort is helping you build muscle, lose fat, become stronger and more fit and moving you toward your goals.

If you’re having one of those days with no motivation where you feel like you’d rather stay on the couch than go train, remember that your mental projection of the workout is not the workout itself. One is an imagined thought and one is a real experience. And the real experience won’t be nearly as bad as the thought.

You have to use rational thinking to recognize this. You have a fitness goal, you have a plan, and you’re going to stick to it and move forward because you know it’s the right thing to do.

Emotions are volatile. They can be all over the place because of a bunch of different factors, but if you logically know it’s the right thing to do, then just do it anyway.

As you take action toward your goal – put your gym clothes on, travel to the gym, put your headphones in, do your warmup, do your first set – your whole mindset will usually automatically shift as you go. You'll feel that workout motivation you were lacking before. Before you know it, you’ll be in the middle of your workout and you’ll realize it’s not a big deal after all. You might even enjoy it.

When you’re done, you’ll always feel better than you would have if you had stayed home. And you’ll thank yourself for it.

Remember that the more you take action in spite of negative thoughts, the less power those thoughts will have to throw you off course in the future – and this is true not only in fitness but in pretty much every other area of life as well.

There's never a time AFTER you are finished working out where you say to yourself "ugh, I regret working out today." At least not for me :)

I often find that when I don't feel like going to the gym I actually have some of my best workouts.

I’ve been sitting in the car outside my gym for like 20 minutes and I’m desperation just searched YouTube for motivation. I’m walking into the gym now, thanks bruh

You worded this whole thing so beautifully. A lot of people that give this advice see it in a very shallow way thinking “Don’t be lazy” “you’re being lazy” “get off your ass” but that mindset just doesn’t work for the majority of people. This was a beautiful way of describing it and giving us step by step ways to help us conquer our negative feelings regarding working out, and this concept even transcends just working out.

"Emotions are volatile. They can be all over the place." TRUTH!

Agreed. There's been countless days I've dreaded going to the gym and zero days where I regret going after.

"Successful people do what they don't want to do, when it has to be done." I've said that to myself when I'm tired and have never regretted going to the gym once the blood starts pumping.

You're spot on. It's the preparation, the getting there that sucks. This is my personal technique for dealing with that. Going to the gym or household chores for example, I start chanting my mantra, "I don't wanna I say it over and over again while I'm preparing, on my way, and going through the motions before actually doing the thing. This puts me in a trance like state magically transporting me to the point that I'm doing the part I actually want to do such as working out or eating the food I just cooked, or looking at a totally empty kitchen sink and full dish drying rack.

The key to motivation in anything is doing something, just getting off my butt and doing absolutely anything. And when I stagnate, like when I'm playing the same old crap on guitar every day, I try something new or a new way of doing the same thing.

The one downside of that with regard to the gym is, it's always the same machines, same exercises, it doesn't change much. But I can control things like how I dress, or how fast or slow I do things, the time of day I exercise, and so on.

So true. The anxiety you get of working out really comes from visualizing what you have to do. My workout anxiety didn't go away until I stopped thinking about it and just did it.

Great advice as always. This can be applied to anything you do in your life. Work, school, business, and relationships. Always be live in the present and do what you can at this moment.

Thank you. I've lost a lot of motivation since moving to the U.S from Australia and you've helped me realise not to listen to all the nonsense in your mind preventing you from progressing but just get it done.

Great message Sean.
I'm be 39 years old this year. I'm approaching my "declining years" I guess. That's what motivates me to when I don't feel like it! Knowing it'll get harder and harder to put on/keep muscle as the years go by. I basically want to say I reached my fitness goals in life.
I Appreciate you man. 💪

Been feeling demotivated lately training and stumbled upon this video, honestly don't know if it'll help but great video, no over exaggerated voice or music, just real talk and straight to the point.

I remember this kind of advice you gave 2-3 years ago, when you said something along the lines of "just start" and that was a light bulb moment for me. Great advice as always.
