Don't Feel Like Going To The Gym? Remember THIS
No matter how long you’ve been training, some days, you just don’t feel like going to the gym. You won't feel any gym motivation or desire to lift.
But I’ve realized after years of consistent training that the *thought* of going to the gym is the real obstacle, not the workout itself. The anticipation of discomfort is usually a lot worse than the actual experience.
The physical and mental state that you’re in while you anticipate the workout ahead isn’t the same state you’ll be in once you’re actually doing the work. Once you take action, those negative thoughts start to shut off and everything starts flowing more easily.
If you’re sitting there envisioning your whole workout, all the sets and reps and the physical and mental demands, it can be daunting, but if you break it all down moment by moment, it isn’t nearly as bad.
The reality is, you can’t do the entire workout as a whole. You can only ever do one rep at a time.
In the moment of performing that one rep, if you absorb yourself in all the sensations involved, it can actually be meditative. It can even be pleasurable if you think about how that physical discomfort is helping you build muscle, lose fat, become stronger and more fit and moving you toward your goals.
If you’re having one of those days with no motivation where you feel like you’d rather stay on the couch than go train, remember that your mental projection of the workout is not the workout itself. One is an imagined thought and one is a real experience. And the real experience won’t be nearly as bad as the thought.
You have to use rational thinking to recognize this. You have a fitness goal, you have a plan, and you’re going to stick to it and move forward because you know it’s the right thing to do.
Emotions are volatile. They can be all over the place because of a bunch of different factors, but if you logically know it’s the right thing to do, then just do it anyway.
As you take action toward your goal – put your gym clothes on, travel to the gym, put your headphones in, do your warmup, do your first set – your whole mindset will usually automatically shift as you go. You'll feel that workout motivation you were lacking before. Before you know it, you’ll be in the middle of your workout and you’ll realize it’s not a big deal after all. You might even enjoy it.
When you’re done, you’ll always feel better than you would have if you had stayed home. And you’ll thank yourself for it.
Remember that the more you take action in spite of negative thoughts, the less power those thoughts will have to throw you off course in the future – and this is true not only in fitness but in pretty much every other area of life as well.
