my personal three are minor scale, harmonic minor and phrygian. As you learn the minor scale you also learn the pentatonic, as you just remove 2 notes. Harmonic minor is almost the same as minor however it does have that evil tonality from the major 7th. the phrygian scale is amazing because it lets you connect other minor scales. the phrygian scale is the minor scale of the next string, for sxample e phrygian = a minor. that said if you know the phrygian scale you can also create and extend minor scales.

Blend Mixolydian + 2 notes from the Blues scale: 1-2-b3/3-4-b5-5-6-b7. Even b2-b6-7 can be used chromatically which results in all 12 notes! Only go up from b3 to 3.

Knowing how to mix minor and major pentatonic and on which chords to play them, that is the actual art

This might be a good roadmap for learning guitar scales: Learn all 5 shapes of the pentatonic scale and learn how to use the relative major and minor pentatonics within the shape, practice playing octaves of the major pentatonic scale and minor pentatonic scales within each of the shapes Then practice how to play them as blues scales. then expand the pentatonic shapes into diatonic shapes, and use the way of playing the minor and major scales that you learnt with the pentatonic scapes to play the major and relative minor scales using the shapes. also use this way of practice to practice the Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, and Locrian modes by playing octaves starting off different root notes. Then learn harmonic minor then melodic minor and practice the modes within the scale shapes. Combine the Major and Minor scales to get the Hybrid scale used by Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page and Slash.

I'd personally recomend learning the Minor Pentatonic, Minor Scale and the Harmonic Minor. If you understand a bit of theory, you can pretty much use them in major contexts too!

I really love playing Dorian and Locrian. Cause I love the haunting sound of the scale.

Isn’t the C major pentatonic scale the second position of the minor pentatonic? 🤔

Major pentatonic + flat 3 is the major blues scale. Practice mixing the parallel major and minor blues scales in your solos for a classic bluesy sound.

Notice his C MAJOR Penta is really just position #2 of the relative Minor Penta scale which is Aminor Penta. It is the same 5 notes. Root location changes in Major mode but all notes are exactly the same. You could slide down your pinky is on C and play shape one, staring on A, 1-4, 1-3, 1-3, 1-3, -14, 1-4. 1 will be on A and 4 will be on C. Simple.
If it is a major progression, you can always play the relative minor. You cannot however in a minor progression jump up and start playing the relative Major scale. That will usually sound horrible.
