People didn’t like MCU Ultron cause they kept comparing him to the more serious and powerful scary evil he is in the comics, which might have also worked here but I really liked what they did with it. James Spader’s performance is just so fun. Plus in What If they showed how close Ultron got to actually winning and becoming as omnipotent as he has been in the comics so it wasn’t impossible for this Ultron to reach that level.
