I am recovering from rotator cuff surgery on my left shoulder. In my opinion, the shoulder is the weirdest, most bizarre joint in the human body. My orthopedic surgeon and my physical therapist agree with me! Great video, Hank and Emily.

After 3 surgeries on my shoulder due to a torn labrum, I can personally testify how important shoulders are. They hold us up and allow us to lift others up. Without both shoulders being functional, the whole spine and body is affected.

Fun fact: this is also the reason why whales/dolphins flap their tails up and down rather than side to side like fish.

The ancestors of whales and dolphins were somewhat wolf like. Imagine a running greyhound and how its spine contracts vertically with each stride. So proto whales kept the same direction of flex when evolving into a fully aquatic life style.

Reptiles however, waddle their spines side to side when they walk. So when some of them decided to go full aqua, they flap their tails horizontally like fish. Go look up the extinct marine dino Ichthyosaur. It’s fascinating.

I've read that these mobile adaptable shoulders are the most frequently injured joint in the human body due in part to the extreme mobility provided. Guess there's always trade-offs.
